I have read some articles about Sarah Palin. Using the term "blood libel" to explain media judgments of her pseudo-violent political witticisms, Sarah Palin sought to claim a number of the attention surrounding the Arizona shootings Wednesday. On a list of gaffes deemed "Palinisms" by popular culture, blood libel could be added to a list that includes "refudiate" and "death panel." What blood libel truly means is a lie told by Christians with the centuries about Jews seeking the blood of Christian children for their sacred observances. Palin is going to need to take out a huge personal loan to buy her foot out of her mouth if she isn't careful

The very use of the term demonstrates how off the deep end the persecution complex of the neo-Birchers has become. You may recall that the "blood libel" was a term referring to the numerous pogroms, persecutions and inquisitions held against Jews throughout European history. The claim took two forms. First, that Jews used the blood of murdered children in their religious rituals, and if that didn't work, a fall-back on the belief that since Jews were deicides they deserved to die anyway. Millions of people over centuries were tortured, persecuted, made homeless, or murdered because of this bit of church-approved lunacy. These were, in other words punishment for crimes that the Jewish people did not commit, based on a series of hysterical lies.

Sarah Palin did say the things people are accusing her of saying. The fact that she's scrubbed her website and Facebook page does not hide the fact that she was front and center in calling for "second amendment solutions" to what her and her fellow Neo-Bircher tea baggers see as problems. Her page featured a picture with sniper scopes over different congressional districts. So to say that this claim is a libel is simply false. Second, the only blood spilled has been at the hands of lunatics who bought Palin's rhetoric. Nobody has targeted Palin for assassination, she hasn't had to flee to Warsaw, she hasn't had her wealth seized. On the contrary, she continues to live her fatuous little life, spewing what her handlers tell her to spew with the precision of an assault rifle fired from a helicopter.

I don't know if she actually believes this. I don't know if she really thinks that she's not making an incredibly offensive, ignorant and bigoted statement by calling the criticism she has received a blood libel. She's been living in her world so long it's possible she might actually believe these things. If that is not the case, then she is, at best a cynical monster who will say anything to rile her gullible audience. At worst, she's subject to a delusional messiah complex. It's just proof that believing stupid things, makes you very very stupid.
