Rude Policemen

My wife got pulled over by the police yesterday... apparently she was using her mobile phone whilst driving (this is subject to a fixed penalty fine of ,£60 (and possibly 3 points can't remember))... the police man was already writing the ticket before he got to the window of her car.

She opened the window and the police man demanded that she give him her drivers license. My wife refused saying "I will if you tell me why you've pulled me over." The police man proceeded to tell her that he had seen her using her mobile phone whilst driving and the he was going to give her a fixed penalty ticket.

Now, what this policeman didn't know, and should have checked was... my wife had left her mobile phone at home on the dining room table. She said that she had left it at home but the police man was very rude and said he didn't believe her saying "How do I know you haven't hid it in the car?". At this point my wife had become very angry with the police man.

She asked him for his badge number, he quickly moved his hand up and covered up one of them. Unfortunately for him, they have a number on each shoulder, my wife wrote down this number immediately. Now... when you are rude to my wife, she becomes very stubborn. He again demanded that my wife give him her drivers license, and she refused to unless he started treating her like a human being.

The police man was now threatening to arrest her for not providing information at the road side. This made my wife's blood boil. She shut the window on him and drove off to the local police station, the police man quickly following in his car.

She stormed into the police station and demanded to see the most senior police officer on duty to make a formal complaint. At this point the rude police man entered the building and tried to grab her wrist to put cuffs on her. She turned to the man and said "Touch me again and I'll sue you for harassment and false arrest!"

As she was saying this, the police Sargent entered the room and the rude police man backed off. My wife was now shaking she was so angry, she asked the Sargent if she could speak to him in private. They went into another room and she explained what had happened and even offered the Sargent her mobile phone number so he could call it whilst at her car.

The Sargent said it wouldn't be necessary, gave my wife a cup of tea and said he would sort it out. When my wife was leaving she could hear the Sargent tearing the rude police man a new arse hole shouting "She didn't even have her phone with her you idiot!".

My wife has guts, and I love her for it.

(This is my account of what happened from what she said, my memory can be a bit screwy at times so it's possible I got some details wrong but the main story is there)

He refused to give his number and even covered it up?
That's pretty much straight-forward illegal, I hope she mentioned that to him.

On the topic of rude policemen, my friend, his girlfriend and myself were pulled over by a policeman once in town. As this was the first time either of us had been pulled over and my friend had only been driving for a few months, we weren't even aware that we were being pulled over at first and when we did notice we ensured we were somewhere safe before we pulled over. This angered the policeman who acted like a complete douche, ranting and raving about how we were trying to avoid the police or whatever then pointing out how I was sat in a lap belt and making up some false law that only under 14s could sit in it. Which is obviously the complete opposite of the law itself. Eventually he even claimed that he had pulled us over because the tail light was out (we checked it after he had left, it wasn't).
Yet we had to remain calm and just let him have his little rage because we feared he'd simply arrest us all for some new made up rule.

/rant

Never got his badge number, crud.

Doesn't sound like your wife was very nice to that poor police officer, he probably had a quota of tickets to write that month.

Seriously, you can actually get arrested for refusing to give your details and failure to stop. Even though it turned out alright in the end.

Well, you have to give your license here, too, even if they just "picked" you out.

Your wife was right to speak up against the unjustified fine but not entirely correct in her behaviour either

I would say she did the correct thing from a purely moral perspective, although she was running an awful risk by not going quietly.

Nevertheless I think that overall, she took the correct course of action. That police officer won't pull a stunt like that again, and even if she had been arrested, you could have made something out of suing the police force-both monetarily and in publicity.

This happened to my ex-GF about 5yrs ago, she was more conciliatory but the end result was the same.

On a broader note......so the power of the Police uniform appeals to petty bullies.........who woulda thunk it.........

I'm not going to say all officers walk around with an undeserved cantor of power, or that they all were probably the guys that beat up kids when they were in high school - but never went anywhere in life, so they had to resort to becoming a police officer to meet ends meet...
I AM going to say that I got a $100 dollar ticket for driving 2 MPH over the speed limit : which means that I have a poor standing on a system that requires officers to pull over and write up a perfectly innocent and (frankly) common mistake. I AM going to talk badly about how they all cut on their lights to skip traffic lights, and to cut in line at fast-food resteraunts.

-_-
Sounds like the guy was being a total douche. I would have pulled-rank on him too.

I wasn't suggesting that all, or even most policemen are petty bullies, just that jobs with that level of power attract many negative personality types.

You ever seen a movie with an Alabama police man in it?

They're the most accurate steriotypes thrown our way. The ALL cock their arms Akimbo, overly question you about trivial things, and the like. Alot of the time, they'll just pull you over, interrogate you to find something to write you a ticket for, then be on their way.
o_O
There's ALOOOT of those in Alabama. Not all of them, but most that I've seen.

I heard Rich Hall say that policemen in Nebraske will pull you over just cos they're lonely.

Awesome, big cookie from me to her. I'm so proud. I've been posting regularly elsewhere on the injustice of the police and abuse of police powers, so nice to see someone actually throwing it back at the fuckers.
