Red Oasis

I figured it was about time I overtly plugged my site. :)

This is a webcomic I draw called Red Oasis. It's a more... realistic approach to that old staple of science fiction, Martian colonization. We try to be as thorough as possible in our research and we even created a tech section for all the nerds out there who might be interested. We pretty much designed our own portable rebreather system that uses liquid oxygen and nitrogen tanks.

But enough of the nerd porn. This is the Creativity section after all, so here's some art. This is an early concept drawing. (That is not the rebreather design we ended up settling on.)

Here's the most recent page:

And this is a video I just uploaded of that page being drawn. Rendering in 1080p is a real pain, so I hope you click on it and watch it in full HD. :)

And finally, a link to my deviantart page.

 That looks fucking cool man!

Why have you been holding out?

What program(s) do you use? Did you go to school for that?

EDIT: I just watched the whole video... I don't know if it was the music or the art but I was a little mesmerized  I can't believe how much detail you put into that little cityscape. It would be cool to see how you make something a little more organic as well ;)

EDIT (Again): Oh look, I found one...

I do love the way it's done. Are these "Arcs" related to each other through the story, or are they just individual short stories based around the same universe?

Hey, thanks. I use an art program called Open Canvas. Though it's made by a Japanese company and they've discontinued their English version. It saves every stroke you make allowing you to play it back later (which is how I made the videos.) I took a couple art classes at a community college, if that counts as "going to school for it."

A little of both.

I can't help but think there is more to this story than you're capable of telling through comic book format... Have you considered writing a graphic novel?

We designed it to be mostly open-ended so we could write whatever story ideas came to us (not being restricted by a set cast or a rigid story.) But there is a general direction to it that we've mostly agreed upon and we do have long-form story ideas that we'd like to explore in other mediums. Right now, though, I'm the one that puts the most time in it (being the artist and the only one without proper job) and it would be great if I could work on stuff like this full time, but I'd like to get a degree first (a film degree ;)) so it'll have to remain a hobby for now.
