Hello

I have been vegetarian for some time now, but I often worry that I might not be getting a properly balanced diet. I don't want any of these stupid how to lose weight ridiculous sensationalist books, I want a scientifically accurate book that provides the best way to achieve a balanced diet as a vegetarian. I thought I would ask you guys, but I realise I will probably just get shit for being a veggie

Cheers
Laurens

My work sells quite a few vegetarian cook books and they're more popular than people would assume.

Tomorrow I could take a look at what sells the best...

Unfortunately, vegetarians fall victim to the same wannabe-Buddhist pseudo-intellectual spiritualist bullshit that minimalists seem to. I don't have anything to contribute, but do want to assure you the shit-giving I hand out for vegetarians is limited to those morans. My brother's girlfriend, for instance. I'll see if she knows anything though that might be based in reality.

What type of vegetarian are you? Ovo-vegetarian? Lacto-vegetarian? Lacto-ovo-vegetarian or no animal products or byproducts besides honey?

In all seriousness, just use normal recipes and substitute chicken with firm tofu, presto: vegetarian.

To add to what MRaverz and BrainBlow said: You've gotta think in terms of souls. Just think about the amount of snails that had to die so your one piece of salad survives. It's much more ethical to eat a Schnitzel. ;)

I'm dropping by my aunts today, she's a veggy-burger. I'll ask around, but they're all German books.

Don't forget how tasty meat is. Thinking about bacon now and I am starting to drool. Can I borrow a napkin?

I eat eggs & dairy. I'm not so much looking for a recipe book, but rather some information on the kinds of foods I should eat to maintain a healthy balanced diet, I know that as a vegetarian you have to make sure to get enough protein and vitamin B12, however I just wasn't sure if there might be something else that my diet was missing.

Iron? Just basically eat a balanced diet without the meat - eat mushrooms, broccoli, Tofu, Soybeans, lentils, blackstrap molasses, kidney beans, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, Swiss chard, tempeh, black beans, prune juice, beet greens, tahini, peas, bulghur, bok choy, raisins, watermelon, millet, eggs, milk and cheese, dark green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, nut butters, seed butters, avocado, and coconut and many more.

Just look up what the human body generally needs and then look up the details of the foods you generally eat.

If you're eating eggs and dairy I wouldn't worry too much if I was you. B12 you're guaranteed to get enough of and protein is easier than you'd think to get a good amount of. I don't even eat that much tofu, I usually only do that for convenience. Beans are great though. And so are lentils. They make great soups and such.

Protein combining can be a good thing though. Legumes with either seeds, nuts or grains for example.

But in all seriousness, as long as you make sure you get enough iron, you should be fine. (beans, pumpkin seeds)
Iron rich food is best taken along with Orange juice, Broccoli or Red capsicum. Not so good eaten with coffee, coffee kind of inhibits the absorption of it.

The fact that you eat milk and eggs means that it's a lot less likely you'd get any problems.

Lol, I knew I'd get loads of shit for being a veggie... Nothing I haven't heard before :p

Thank you Independent Vision and AdmiralPeacock for actually addressing the point at hand :) the rest of you can suck my hole

OK then, here you go. My aunt has hundreds of books on the subject, but I forgot to ask her. I've got two books at home though, so here we go:
Vegetarische Kà¼che (Vegetarian Cuisine)
This book has a nice introduction about what kinds of food you should eat, which ones provide what, etc. And then, there are 100 recipes in there.

Wok vegetarisch (Vegitarian Wok)
This one gives you the amount of Protein, Calories, etc. per meal. It also has a list at the beginning, showing you how fast you can make this, how easy it is, if it costs a lot, if it's spicy, if it's vegan, etc.

Only if you wrap it in bacon. :)

You're very welcome. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian as well, I was a vegan for a while, and slowly going back to that. So, I know what it's like.
I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian with an occasional off period as a pescarian for the past 10 - 11 years now, I've heard it all.

I'm bad at recipes though, I usually cook by heart.
One staple we always have at home are Cannelini beans. They're very tasty and can make a great lasagna filling. They're high in iron as well, so they're good for that. I use them in everything... salads, soups, pastas.

I would say look for books on Nutrition not vegetarianism.
Note that nutritionist isn't a protected title, whilst dietician is protected.
