Random thanx

Well, actually I'm just doing a little happy dance.
I got an (English) essay back with quite good marks.
I think that reading and writing here quite contributed to my writing level and getting into the habit of writing (more or less) consistent texts, so I think I should give thanx just because this place exists and proviodes me with the opportunity to practise.

So, thank you all for being here

The same goes for me, so txs all!

Oh, and to all grammar Nazis: thou shalt listen to Mr. Fry:

practice, not practise. ^^,
Wrong
Practise, BE
I always find it funny when AE speakers try to correct non-native speakers for their use of BE

Bad grammar is bad grammar. ;)

But bad grammar is not necessarily bad spelling...

Although I can understand a lot of the spelling differences between American English and British, I'm not in favour of much of the compound/portmanteau words that have cropped up these past few decades. Especially the word guesstimate, which actually pissed me off just now typing it into this text box. A warning from Eric Arthur Blair...

You obviously didn't watch Fry
From a linguist's point of view (at least the modern type), there's no such thing as bad spelling or grammar. Languages change. Nowadays, most grammars and dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive. There's more or less only appropriateness, not so much "correctness".

Welcome to Canada.

We're some of the most confused English and French spellers on the globe. Microsoft doesn't help much. Which dictionary do you use, LRkun?

I appreciate the site for allowing me a philosophical/political outlet that isn't overly useful in my immediate life, but does a bit to fulfill my interest. My spelling is here and there. :D I make up words constantly. But I'm glad to see I'm not alone benefiting from the process.
