Sigh.

My third PS3 died tonight. Can't believe how unreliable I have found them to be.

First 2 were replaced under warranty, but this one is out of warranty so I'm going to have stump up ,£250 to buy a new one because Sony seems to have made their units out of snot and tissue.

And people say the x-box has a high failure rate (it does, but that's besides the point). That being said, losing three of them is extremely bad luck, are you sure it doesn't have something to do with where you keep it? (ie exposed to heat, vents blocked things of that nature) I'm not trying to accuse you of negligence of course, just it seems either you have very bad luck, or there is something else at work here.

i had a simmilar issue with repeated breakages and thus have given up on the console as a concept, Long live PC gaming.

My Sega Master System still works...and my SNES...

This is what you get for letting Sony and Microsoft take over your gaming life. I won't even let them touch my PC.

My sister and her fiance has had three PS3 break down on them as well, the first two they replaced under warranty but the third one died one week after the warranty expired. It does not seem to be a very good system at all.
Everyone I know that has owned one has had to replace it at least once.

I haven't "upgraded" yet, I 'm still on my PS2 which still works. I actually have one back in Sweden which my sister took over when I left, which still works as well.

I'm currently on my 3rd 360. It just seems that Microsoft and Sony rushed everything to try and get the biggest profit by cutting corners, while Nintendo did it right from the off. I've never had a single problem with my Wii.

I'm on my 3rd Wii system. First one had bad video. Second one had bad network connection. Finally, when the 3rd replacement came in, Nintendo forgot to transfer my virtual console account to the unit.....awesome...just awesome.

So how are my 60GB PS3 and 360 Elite holding up? Just fine. I realize I'm within the extremely unlikely cases of general hardware failure trends though.

Nothing wrong with a Wii, it's got some great games and it's fun to play which is all you need from a system.

Reason number 99 for being a PC gamer.

I play games on PC as well, and I've had problem with it. The big plus with it though is that you can usually fix it yourself instead of having to ship the whole thing back for repairs.

It's a technically unfair comparison.

The SNES and other pre-CD platforms had little to no moving parts, no operating systems and such.

To run the games of today you NEED high tech stuff, high tech stuff breaks easier.

I personally do not own consoles, I am a PC gamer to the end, but I worked for Xbox Support and the comparison of an SNES's durability to a Xbox 360 is not an honest one.

Bottom line: don't buy consoles.

my gamecube and nintendo 64 still work

my brother's wii still works after near daily play since christmas the year it was released.

since I don't possess or wish to possess an xbox of any sort, again I don't allow microsoft into my home - closest is spoofing my browser into thinking I'm running windows - I don't know what the cause of the red ring of death is. However, the ylod that my roommate's ps3 suffered was a simple disc read error.

A disc read error. . .

I've never had a problem with my PS3, and it's survived two overseas trips, one of which it was in a cargo container with several other items...

For PC I got by the tried and true level of complexity scale.

Don't know how to use computers? Get a Mac with their OS.

Know how to use computers fairly decently? Get Windows.

Know how to use computers very well? Get Linux.

As a primary PC gamer I stick to Windows because my games work with no hassle. Considering I have over 200 games on Steam spanning 3 decades of technology, it's nice having an OS that can handle them all flawlessly.

This isn't entirely true, PCs are compatible for beginners as well - plus there are plenty of guides out there.

Macs are essentially just big shiny over-priced boxes. :D

You'll have problems with all systems really, but as you say - with a PC you can fix it yourself. And usually the most it takes is one search on Google.
