PS2 game not playing

I have a refurbished ps2 bought maybe two years ago, and it works great. The only issues are that when sliding the disc tray out it rubs/makes a noise, and that one of my all time favorite games wont paly. The disc is in no particularly bad condition, in fact its in the top third of the best-kept games in my library. The console occasionally wont read certain cds, usually burnt ones (no red screen, it just says 'reading disc...' until I take it out), but whenever I put this game in (Ratched and Clank 2, btw) it goes red.

Im hoping its not the lens, because Ive been careful not to leave discs in unless Im playing, and I usually leave it in standby instead of turning it off.

One issue, though; I was moving the console across the floor one day and dropped it maybe an inch (dragging it more like, the one end was on the floor). The game that was inside it plays fine, and is in worse condition than r&c.

So I dunno. Should I just try getting another copy of the game, or am I looking at getting a new ps2 (or bwc ps3) down the road?

I'd look at another ps2. It's probably a cheaper solution.

Also, keep in mind that despite being able to play ps2 games on a ps3, the console is not actually backwards compatible. In order to play ps2/1 games you have to buy them again and download them on the playstation network.

False. All ps3's play nearly all ps1 games, with very few exceptions. Several models of the original PS3 had an entire ps/2 implementation in hardware, to remain completely backward compatable which is why the console originally cost close to $700 usd when it first launched. When this hardware implementation was removed, there was still a good 70-80% compatability through software before sony discontinued the feature coming up to the ps3 slims.

You can get a refurb ps2 from gamestop for 60 bucks, or a new slim for 100. Given that OP's ps2 has a tray, it's one of the original 'fat' models and is much less reliable than the newer 'slim' models.

Good on ya if you had one that was able to play older games. However, my roommate's refused to play ps1 or 2 discs, or at least any of the ones I tested, which were:

For PS1: Wild ARMS, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy Chronicles, and Vandal Hearts
For PS2: Disgaea 2, Onimusha, and Prince of Persia.

All discs in relatively good condition

My solution was to play them on my PC, naturally. If there were versions released which were backwards compatible, it was likely after launch. Of course, this is the same system that became unusable due to a disc read error and, rather than just spit the disc out, required him to send it back to Sony for $175+s&h for repair.

I see no reason to suppose that Sony's bullshit PS3 deserves anything more than a blowtorch, and I'll warn anyone who thinks it might be a good idea to waste money on one.

The launch PS3 was the version that was backward compatible with the ps2. All ps3's are backward compatible with nearly all ps1 games. Just because you had experience with a broken unit doesn't invalidate the ability of non-broken units to function as they were designed to, nor does it make a product with a worldwide market in the millions worthless.

Considering that when your roomate's system became unusable he needed to pay to have it repaired, that means that it either functioned properly for its one year manufacturer's warranty period, or its warranty was voided by modification or abuse.

...Well, good news everyone! She was just being tempermental (for like a week, god), and I am now back to leveling my weapons and amassing billions of bolts.

But yes, I do have one of the fatties. I think its an 03 or 04, and once life becomes to much for her I shall trade up for a younger, thinner girl. Thanks for the advice, and come newconsole day, I shall return for more. Until then, I bit you adeur.

Snag yourself a copy of disgaea, now *that's* an engrossing ps/2 game.

The phat model of the ps/2 was notorious for having a shitty optical drive. They aren't hard to swap out though, so if yours breaks, don't toss it, you might find another one at a flea market with, say, a busted power converter and then you can make a frankenstation.

In a totally unrelated note, try taking it out and blowing in the cartridge and putting it back in.

Could not resist.
