Latest development: YouTube are (quite rightly) asking for tons of verification, which fortunately I have been able to give, so I am now waiting to see if this satisfies them as to my identity. I, have been helped by the fact that my name is publicly associated with the Potholer54 channel. It is encouraging that every time I e-mail them, I get a response from a human being and the case is being moved forward. Also positive is the fact that they understand they have to use my old registered e-mail address, rather than the phoney one set up by the hijacker.
Regarding identity theft, I doubt if I would have good legal grounds as long as my channel remains untouched, but the real satisfaction would be in identifying and exposing whoever it was. With luck the hijacker will try to hang on to the channel and show his hand, but I doubt he's that dumb. I'd be interested to know what YouTube would like to do about pursuing this individual, because their reputation has been, harmed far more than mine.
The Potholer54debunks channel has also been hijacked, so the only channels I am running are this one and madeeasyseries. I received a response from YouTube this morning, and once again I am talking to a real human being at YT rather than a computer-generated response. I have sent them photo ID that will match my video "Who I am." The fact that I have publicly revealed my identity will make it very difficult for the hijacker to pretend to be me, but it also makes this, a case of identity theft, since he is not stealing the identity of YouTuber Potholer54 but journalist Peter Hadfield.
@DaithiDublin -- You're quite right to be skeptical. My purpose at this stage is just to warn people to be careful of messages under the Potholer54 name, so if you see "me" posting something like "science is all crap" you'll know I'm not suffering a brain seizure. If I can't get the channel, back then I'll make a video announcing the hi-jacking, and ask other YouTubers to mirror it. So please be patient and thanks for subscribing to the new channel. As you say, it doesn't cost anything, and if I can get the old channel back this one will go dead.
