Pharaoh

This was a cool game, a few cumulative weeks of my life are stored in the cities i built.

Its pretty much an ancient Egyptian Sim-City, and is based on the same engine as Caesar III. You can build various pyramids, type depending on the era you build in, raise an army, import/export foods and goods, and just conquer the shit out of Egypt. Oh, and dont neglect your gods, or else all your work can be destroyed in seconds!

Id say one of my favorite PC games of all time. Anyone else play it?

Oh yes, that game is fantastic. What's really amazing is the level to which people have analysed the game - the algorithms governing production, movement, etc. have been reverse engineered, and used to optimise cities to the point that they are so massive they are just barely stable.

Heh, my cities are always just barely stable, mostly because I just go for the most lavish upper class while having the other 90% of the population working their asses off to sustain it

peasant: "Im starving!"
Me: "I said build the f***ing pyramid!"

I guess thats historically accurate?

Actually, I've heard something about the "slave labour" for building the pyramids was more along the lines of conscripted labour, with actual insurance plans in case of injury.

Yeah, Ive heard that too, but I assume that they may not have had a choice either way. The pharaoh tells you to do something, you do it. At least they got paid, though.
The insurance part is new to me/

I used to play Pharaoh (& Cleopatra) quite a bit. It was the first city-builder I really got into. Love the aesthetics of the game. The mechanics are definitely improved from Caesar III; Emperor improved them further but I've never really had time to play that game as much. Might have to bring Pharaoh out of retirement now. Thanks a lot.

I always had trouble with the controls. Then again, I got it when it was first out. I remember there was something like you couldn't scroll back simply by moving the mouse to the edge of the screen. That killed it for me.

I'm sure that's fixed in a patch or something...but never did go back.

Man I need to think my shelvs to see if I got a copy.
I love city builders, I have been having some fun with Sim City 4 Deluxe.
But Sim City 4 Deluxe has a tendency to crash to desktop, even if I am running in compatibility mode.

And no auto-save function

I would sometimes turn that off in some games to avoid having 20 save files (usually the ones that created a whole new file instead of overwriting), and then I would just exit thinking "Oh, its been autosaving, I shouldnt have to redo to much when I get back" only to find I have three houses and a windmill waiting for me.
