Overrated Games

[Halo] has a b+ story line
Err the first game is pretty good, as are the books written by Eric Nylund; I can't speak for anything else though (the 2nd game was kind of convoluted, I never played the third game, and I never read any of the other books (I'm a bit of a fan of Nylund)).

I think people aren't going to think Oblivion and Fallout 3 are great games if they just aren't fans of that genre. Would you say Morrowind was overrated?
I'm not an RPG fan. It's usually way too much of a bother. Yet I love The Elder Scrolls. Morrowind is most definitely not overrated, though I hated the combat system.

Dead Rising - I don't get how a sandbox game full of zombies could be that not fun.

Any football manager game ever.

Anything with FIFA or Pro Evo in the title.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Like I said, I love a good zombapocalypse scenario, but Dead Rising totally fails to deliver somehow.

With regards to the OP, Diablo 2 was lots of fun. I'd never say it was "overrated", because everyone I heard speak of the game didn't treat it like a second or even first coming, but like the fun, action-packed co-op (optional, of course) romp that it was.
(Incidentally... mentioning only Diablo 2... does that mean you liked the first game, or...?)

Now, this thread would have made more sense if it was called "Over-hyped games". The title is self-explanatory, of course, but at least with that thread we would have at least a fighting chance of bringing the conversation out of the entirely subjective realm.

:)

Oh it's definitely subjective, but we aren't in the reason section ;) .

I picked Diablo II just because it's the one my friends raved about. Never seen Diablo I.

That's what was so frustrating, I loved Oblivion. Completed the main quest, every guild, bought some houses, and then some. I heard Fallout was comparable and was immensely disappointed.

Also my general impression from the gaming section is that I need to find Alpha Centauri ASAP.

I've yet to see a game that has as much depth as Alpha Centauri did.

"Hmm, his base is on the other side of this ocean"

Former: "No problem boss, I'll just terraform you a land bridge!"

As for people feeling shortchanged by Fallout 3, I guess I'm not seeing it. Was it because of the first person combat? I thought Oblivion was overrated compared to Morrowwind, but a lot of thing are when compared to Morrowwind...

Let me offer a, perhaps unique, perspective.

As a fan of the series since Wasteland(the spiritual precursor to Fallout) I felt that Fallout 3 fit perfectly in the world.

However, I was disappointed by the playstyle.

I hate Oblivion, for a number of reasons, the least of which is how overhyped it is. It is written to outright reject systems that it is capable of running on without an issue, as far as I can tell only because Bethesda doesn't like certain . . . I don't even know what. When I spoofed my ATI Card to look like an nVidia card(literally just changed the name it reported, nothing else) I was able to run the game flawlessly.

It certainly works better as a First Person Shooter rather than a First Person Slasher, and part of my instant dislike for Oblivion was the FPSlasher style. Fallout 3 tried to find a middle ground between FPS and traditional gameplay, and it worked. I like the game, as a Fallout game. I do not like it as a shooter, though, honestly.

Oblivion apparently does run HDR + AA on ATi cards, but not on Nvidia cards. The game is weird like that.
I feel stuff like this was a direct result of the hype. One of the bigger hypes from Oblivion was "Radiant AI" (an AI which had citizens look for ways to fulfill a need for, say, food) and they had to cut that out too because people started murdering each other because they needed a rake and the guy next to him just happened to have the only one in the area.
I think they intended to have a lot more in there, and they did remove a lot of stuff that just wasn't finished. However they actually forgot to trim the fat, and thus an unoptimized game was on their hands.
It's a shame, because it is a really good game - it's just not quite excellent due to some annoyances like these.

Definitely Spore.

For all the hassle of it, there really isn't much in the way of pay off... sometimes it feels like the game is trying to piss you off.

Spore annoyed me. For all the hype surrounding it, it was at the end of the day just an original idea, but a bit of a crap game.

Uh... I thought this entire website was a "reason section". :)

Besides, I think it would be a bit more interesting if we used an appropriate yard stick, and not just subjective opinion.

For example, further up, Doc is obviously spouting an objective untruth when he says that Counter-Strike is the worst thing ever made by a human. Clearly this isn't a reasoned opinion, so what good does it do us? Now, if he were to tell us that he dislikes CS because of so and so, or feels it didn't live up to all the hype because this and that, we'd be able to say something qualified about that. But for now, we just have an exclamation which is rendered untrue by the myriads of people who did love the game, and by the game's objective qualities.

The same goes for Diablo 2 (and all the games on your list, really). Millions of people enjoyed the game. It was well-made, polished, fairly bug-free, and many people played it again and again, clearly finding some enjoyment in it. What in particular irked you about that game, which so many other people loved?

But ok... my posts are perhaps an analogy to the very thing that's happening when we all "review" games; different expectations. If people here just want to list "popular" games that they themselves dislike, then this thread probably isn't for me. :)

Personally, I'm crap at CS. I can't walk two feet on some maps without getting shot through the head.

That is what I thought too. You flew through the first part of it, the creature design part and the tribe and civilization part and then you come to the space part it just slows down way to much. I never got very far there. I was either blown up constantly, or it would take way to long to buy a planet. If you were a warrior race, it would have been a lot better to drop a base and have a RTS base building game.
