Obama's Peace Prize?

Really, he's only been in office for nine months, what exactly has he accomplished that makes him worthy of the peace prize?

my initial thought was that it was far too soon

now i am coming across to the point of view that it is not about him but more about the thinking parts of the world seeing that America is not as crazy as they once thought. People forgot how bad Bush was even as compared to his father and Regan and how he shook the worlds faith/hope in the dream of America

I don't think I particularly like it. I am sure it is all deserved via whatever reasoning they may have had, but to me it reinforces the 'obama is the second coming of jesus' type feeling that people seem to have about him.

While that may do wonders for his PR now, it is raising expectations that he can't fulfil. I am sure he is a fine politician, but people are expecting way too much from him.

He's not Bush. Pure and simple, that's all what it chalks up to.

I read on /. that it's being awarded for the "intention" he has, and that it's more of a knock to the Bush admin than an award to the Obama admin.

really he should decline the award..like sartre...not that im comparing the two

theres something i dont like about obama, maybe he is naive , or maybe he is no better than bush hes still 'playing the game' rather than trying to change it.

I'm not a fan of him getting it. I'm sure there could be a decent reason, and have heard a few theories on why he got it, but really none have been convincing. Even if he has helped reshape the world view of the US, thats still just getting a very prestigious reward for being "Not-Bush," which I don't think is right. Especially when you look at the other major candidates, Obama is much less deserving than some of them.

My major concern is the response my friends had. On good ol' Facebook I say dozens of my friends commending him on his great effort for global peace. Honestly, I could have asked any one of them and none could give me a good reason why he deserved it. It just shows how damn dogmatic politics have become, each party is like its own religion. Around 75% of my friends considering themselves liberals, nearly all of them well support Obama or the democratic party on ANYTHING, for ANY REASON.

http://politics.slashdot.org/story/09/10/09/123207/Barack-Obama-Wins-the-2009-Nobel-Peace-Prize
"In awarding President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian committee is honoring his intentions more than his achievements. After all he has been in office only just over eight months and he will presumably hope to serve eight years, so it is very early in his term to get this award. ... The committee does not make any secret of its approach. It states that he is being given the prize 'for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples.' This is of course an implied criticism of former US president George W Bush and the neo-conservatives, who were often accused of trying to change the world in their image."

The peace prize hasn't been worth a wooden nickel since they gave one to Arafat.

I must disagree. It was after they gave it to Kissinger.

My first thought when I heard it was that Europe must still be swept with "Obamamania" like Americans on election day.

Obama sworn in as President - 20th January
Closing date for Nobel Nominations - 1st February

What the hell did he do in 9 days? I know people have said he was nominated for his intentions, but I'm sure there's many a person with far better intentions, but in a position to do fuck all. And I thought Nobel prizes were given out for people's actions and performances in certain fields by experts also in those fields. But in the peace category we have Obama being rewarded for jack shit by ex-politicians who have no training in conflict resolution or peace building.

It's all fucking politics!
