Now, since Hitler was an atheist, Stalin was a christian

We all find it very annoying, don't we?
The good old claim that Hitler was an atheist and therefore atheism is bad.
Now, in her latest video, ZOMGitsCRISS walks down the same road, only in the other direction, claiming that Stalin was not an atheist, because of his religious upbringing.
I don't deny that Stalin's religious upbringing might have contributed to his ways of thinking, his dogmatic beliefs (if you ever botrher to read Lenin you'll be surprised how much Lenin himself despised dogma) and his ideas about power and authority, but by simply saying that he wasn't an atheist because his ways of thinking were similar to those of religious dogmatics is just plain denial in my opinion.

Although it's unfortunately necessary to fix people's understanding of Hitler and his beliefs, I think we need to be careful about using infamous leaders or dictators as examples of typical atheists or Christians. I've never seen a world leader worth talking about who was normal in any way, religious or otherwise, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, all of them, under their religion, dogma, and vile acts, is mental illness, and should be discussed in that light.

hmm, well it is worth a discussion how much a dogmatic religion had influence on the way of thinking for stalin... i don't think thank would disqualify him from the term atheist.

being an asshole doesn't require a faith, but being a special asshole who thinks he's doing the right thing despite all evidence that your doing it wrong, that requires something a powerfull as religion.

on the other hand, the argument of hitler being an atheist, which is proven wrong on so many levels... then matching other famous people with different religions would be an interesting counter-argument.
like calling jesus a scientologist, the prophet mohammed a jew, the abrahamic god a satanist, etc... we can have alot fun with that game.

Well, it only means that these individuals had different classifications, but it doesn't mean that the classification itself represents the whole. ^^

As for Hitler, see my signature. . .

That said, there are groups of atheists who are obscenely dogmatic as well. For instance, so-called Objectivists (more appropriately, the Rand-bots) cling to her words like gospel (This in mind from my last post, incidentally, I'm not on a sudden anti-Rand spree). They uphold understanding and objective rationality, while dogmatically refusing to analyze their own positions. In many ways these people are infinitely more frustrating to deal with than fundamental Christians going No-True-Christian on Hitler.

As far as I was aware, Stalin never cited religion as motivation. It may have contributed to his mode of thought, but there are a million things that influence the way one thinks. Religion is not necessarily thought-destructive (in the moderate wishful-thinking and death-comfort mode). Likewise, there are many things which promote dogmatic modes of thought without ever scraping on religion - war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

Clearly its moustaches that make people evil...
I've had that hypothesis for a while. Stalin and Hitler were supposedly of opposite ideologies, but really, they were both 'TACHIST.
Mao had a moustache too. His was just invisible.

I have not seen ZOMGitcrisis vid yet on that.

But in any case both statements would be wrong, imho. Not sure, but it is said and proven that some level of occult was in mixed in his organisation. Wasnt there even a castle somewhere were SS top leaders met, that had a round table or chamber in it? At that time such thing's had a lot of interrest to people. Seances and such were very common in the late 1800 to 1900. And surely in the early 1900's too.

If Hitler was an atheist, then atleast he was very busy making a religion around himself and the naziparty.

But for both Hitler and Stalin you can simply state one thing that is true:

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Whatever and if any religion was in play for any of these two world evil villians ... it was not the religion, or lack of, that made them do these things. It was the power of control, and the twisted results of idea's spawned.

How to control the masses? Point out something and say "bad bad bad kill kill kill". Say it enough of times, put some muscles behind it, use propagande and fear .... and there you have it.

It is one of the great things of (most) democracies, that leader's are prevented from being in power to long for exactly that reason. That power corrupts.
