N Korea fires artillery shjots at S Korean island, 4 casualties, 70 houses on fire.
S Korea is intervening with fighter jets to stop the artillery.

I hope this is just a show off to strengthen their position at the bargaining table.
One news article said it might be a response to Kim Jong Il dying and showing the north is still strong.
I just hope it doesn't escalate a lot further, with them showing off that nuclear facility and all.

Update:
The korean foreign ministry, once the incident is concluded, will consider consulting the UN.

Artillery fire has ceased, one confirmed dead and several injured, evacuation of the island is complete.

Update #2:

A North Korean naval fleet is moving toward South Korea, according to news agency MBC.
Also, they are preparing additional artillery capable of firing 30km.

I read mixed reports on reliability of this twitter.

S. Korea calls N. Korea's artillery attack "clear military provocation."

Reliable sources dismiss LiveNewsWire as "bullshit".

Inofficial update: Reliable anecdotal sources also mention that people are panicking, apparently some (not said how many) are leaving the larger cities.

I suspect it'll be difficult having a clear representation of the truth in this situation anyway.

Kim-Jung has been a bit weird for a while, too. :)

Last update from me: People are being evacuated into bunkers, a reliable source translates Korean news station MBC's report.

My prediction: lots of tension, no escalation, nobody wants war. NK is starving because the new prime minister halted the human aid shipments a while ago, probably the reason for the lashing out.

I hope people there all stay safe. Fuck military regimes.

Me too.

I can't help but think this whole thing may have been in the making a while and the time calculated to some extent. There's been a few provocations but few that have taken hold in the last few months. Nice that the western world is feeling Afghanistan weary. What do you think?

Scary stuff especially if Seoul gets nailed by North Korea, this could automatically warrant defence actions by the US military being an important Ally - then it's how the US would handle the next step if this were to happen which could really stoke the fire.

Don't you think this is all a bit of a coincidence considering they've only discovered a so-called nuclear enrichment plant on North Korea a few days ago?

They didn't discover it, North Korea showed it to them, in a rather unusual move for them.

Oops sorry, thanks for that - either way, coincedance or not? (US envoy to North Korea Stephen Bosworth visited Seoul and Tokyo seeking support to deescalate North Korea's nuclear program yesterday).
