So, Hurricane Sandy just took a turn directly for New England and people are especially concerned about the potential damages and power loss and the media is hyping it up. Being that I live in Florida and hurricanes are nothing special(at least for my area) a category 1 storm could be worse, though for an urban arae like New York city and surrounding areas (The storm is being tracked as heading for D.C. rather than New York City) the major threats are power outage and flooding in areas not prepared. There's been plenty of documentaries and etc about how disastrous a Cat 5 Storm hitting New York City. I don't think this is going to measure up to that but it may still cause notable damage and loss of life if it stalls out over the population dense areas.
See Link, although I think it's crap after a quick read, notable the 7th paragraph, where the author states that scientists are cautious about drawing links between short term weather conditions and long term climate change, and then contradicts this and basically says "Forget what the scientists say, climate change is making crazy weather."
