I found this article in the guardian via a random website about this laser I had vaguely heard about on Colbert Report.

Apparently, it is likely to revolutionize energy production with a breakthrough in fusion technology.

Is anyone else excited? I just went from six to midnight!

Depends, the article says hydrogen is the fuel source - I've heard of similar plans with deuterium which I think are still many years away. Not enough info to be able to tell :x

This uses deuterium and tritium as fuel... should go fully online next year but it is not designed to actually retrieve energy from the fusion reactive, it can only conduct experiments.

More information is available at https://lasers.llnl.gov/programs/nif/how_nif_works/
