My turn to say hello

From the reading I've done thusfar, I can see that I'll be both frustrated and elated by the community here. I look forward to making an ass of myself for your collective amusement.

Now, for the 'About me' section of this post.

In the interests of honesty and integrity, I should be forthcoming about my internet habits. I frequent 4chan, and as such I shouldn't be taken too seriously if I seem to be coming out of left field in any given post. No, I won't Rickroll anyone, that was old before it was new. I do, however like needling people who are a little full of themselves, and if a thread starts to turn ugly, I tend to throw something rather silly into the ring for no reason other than to hopefully lighten the mood. Or at least annoy the folks up on their soapboxes by not taking them seriously.

Funny enough, Project Chanology prodded me to take a closer look at religious influence on society, from both my own perspective and that of society itself. Thunderf00t's Scientology related videos got me watching his channel, and from there I branched out to most of the channels now associated with this here League of Reason :)

Now, I'm no intellectual heavyweight, I've had no education beyond a rather lackluster highschool career, where the only appeal to me was the music courses. That said, I love reading, I love learning, but I don't do very well in a traditional classroom setting. I found the classwork repetitive and dull, and the lessons were never so challenging that I felt really engaged. Never did homework, but easily passed all the tests and exams they threw at me, so I no doubt frustrated the hell out of the teaching staff.

A few more personal details, I'm 31, married to a likeminded atheist woman who is quite the spitfire. Suffice to say, I'm rarely bored, as she regularly has entertaining tales to share regarding her adventures during her day. She's severely ADHD, even moreso than I am, so having no brakes between her brain and her mouth usually leads to all kinds of entertainment for me :)

Anyway, since I'm not terribly fond of long posts, I'll leave off here. I'm sure future discussions will unveil anything else someone might wish to know, if anyone gives a rat's ass. :D

Welcome aboard, Salphen!

It's good that you're prepared to be frustrated. :)
Not that this board is particularly bad, I think, but frustration seems to be unavoidable and inevitable online.

I hope you'll try out the chatroom someday. Not that it's less frustrating in there, hehe... Well, perhaps it is, actually. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Enjoy your stay here!

You know how it goes on a board like this. One unrealistically expects , after some civil and polite debate, to sway others to their own point of view with ease. Rarely does this ever happen, and for me the frustration comes when watching others grow wroth with one another for not 'seeing reason' as they think they should. Too much is taken far too personally within most online communities I've perused. That may be the reason I'm so fond of the *chan culture. It's brutal, honest in it's own fashion, and it looks at the world without illusion for the most part. The lovely with the ugly, the nice and the nasty, and still has the temerity to laugh at it all. But I may be waxing romantic on the subject

I actually understand your point about 4chan. I had never thought of that myself.

And you are, of course, absolutely right about the rest, too. People are way too quick to anger, and too good to stick to anger. It often becomes highly emotional, even though it gets veiled behind various methods of, well, insulting people "intelligently".

Apparently, there are a lot of "reasons" that aren't seen. People seem to suffer greatly from all the classic cognitive biases (Typical Mind Fallacy, too... an interesting one, I think), which is understandable - I do too - but the problem for me is mostly the anger, which is really unnecessary and counterproductive.

Anyway... I hope this place doesn't disappoint you. :)

You guys should've seen 4chan when it wasn't popular yet. It was lovely back then; now it's just a weak, diluted pile of diarrhea. Oh the days of drrrr and dsfargeg...
