My thoughts on Rachel's Challenge

I'm sorry for not bringing more context to my thread on the title, but here's the gist of it. Recently at my school we had an assembly for a foundation called Rachel's Challenge. It's basically a movement to spread the "teachings" of Rachel Joy Scott, a girl killed in the Columbine Highschool Massacre in 1999. Basically, before being killed she wrote an essay talking about how we should all see the good in everyone and act nice as it starts chain reactions of goodness. Now, I have no problem with this message but the way they delivered it was just so....dicey. Rather than focusing on the main message, they seemed to be trying to make a Christ figure out of her. First they started by saying that she predicted her own deaths with entries in her diary talking about how she didn't expect to live long. Then they went and talked about how she drew this picture with eyes crying out 13 tears representing the 13 deaths resulting from the massacre. They then proceeded to tell us about how a man had a dream of exactly that picture at which point people start gasping and going "OMG she MUST be psychic!". What irks me most is that finally they started comparing the massacre to the holocaust and Rachel to Anne Frank by saying how the two boys who started the shooting were followers of Hitler's ways while simultaneously blaming the media (i.e. tv, violent video games, etc.). They ended by showing baby pictures of her prompting several people to cry at the intense cuteness. The reason I posted this in Religion and Irreligion is because they seemed to be implying that this is all somehow related to Christianity. They made it seem as if Rachel was some completely pure and perfect person who did nothing but good talking about how she saved the lives of so many through her actions. The whole time all I could think of was the parallels between Rachel and Jesus. I'm sorry if I'm not explaining this very well as I haven't had much practice in writing opinion posts. Here's the website for it: http://www.rachelschallenge.org/

It sounds like it's basically the creation of a non-Catholic saint, complete with made up miracles.

OMG It's a prophecy. Lets make it come true!
OMG It came true! It must be a prophecy!
OMG Its a prophecy! It must be Jesus!
OMG Its Jesus! The bible is real!
OMG The bible is real! Kill fags!
OMG killing is wrong? I'm confused!
OMG No questions allowed! KILL KILL KILL.

I just didn't see the point of what they were doing. Were they trying to spread a positive message but went about it the wrong way? Or was it just her father wanting to make a tribute to his daughter? I was just really confused as to what the point of the whole thing was because I couldn't find much meaning in the presentation.

Its not so much as what you say, its how you say it. If what you say is true, I don't think what they are doing is very ethical, especially using someones death to justify the message. Its a good message, but sainthood is bullshit anyway, why would they need to con people if what they say happened. It smells like a con to me.

From the rachel's challenge website...the section that shows the corporate/business menu.

"Through this one-day event, your entire workforce will hear the motivating, true story of Rachel's life and mission. Your company's management and leadership teams will then receive five hours of experiential workshop training that takes Rachel's four challenges and applies them to practical business skills. At the conclusion of the day, the entire workforce will feel more empowered and leaders will be confident in their ability to lead a culture shift within the workplace."

Wow! It empowers your employees too and helps your business make more money! They should have Vince Shlomi pitching this stuff! I don't think little Rachel meant to raise 4th quarter profits for Goodyear as part of her "chain reaction" message.

Plus, all of those folks on the "advisory board" have something to gain due to the publicity and contacts this generates for them. Even if they claim to be non-profit, some of the best "profits" are non-monetary...
