I'll start you off-

Slipknot-Before I Forget- What they are basically saying in this song is that humanity had to work from the ground up to become something significant.

Avenged Sevenfold-Desecrate through Reverence- This song says don't give a shit about what people think about you; don't let anyone control you through any means.

Get the picture? Your turn.

When I listen to any music that promotes any kind of outlook or message, I feel like I'm brainwashing myself.

music never had that kind of effect on me.

all these songs don't have much concept insude, slipknot are good at their stuff, but i'm not gonna learn anything from those... guys.
This song says don't give a shit about what people think about you

only dumb teens pretend that they don't give a shit what people think of them.

edit:I really don't mean you personally, Ahj,

I concur, I went through that crap in middle school and ended up hating myself because I had no friends.

True, music evoking something without the aid of lyrics (which most of the time are shitty) is one hundred times better than the music with lyrics.

Thirded. Music is powerful enough with out contrived messages ruining its purpose. Music explains the inexplicable. And for this reason alone I value instrumental music as being more enjoyable.

However, if I were to venture a try into this topic, I'd say Shostakovich's Fifth and 11th Symphony (especially the second movement- January 5th 1905) are probably the most stirring pieces of music for me.

I prefer to listen to music and read the lyrics ( a lot of my music is impossible to actually understand ) and then take their opinions as I would any of yours, but it has never had any dramatic influence on my own opinions. I've never changed my way of thinking purely because a singer or band I like has written about it. I HAVE had new opinions brought to my attention through lyrics and I have adopted some of them, but I've never changed my opinions purely because a musician says so.

I really like Scar Symmetry's philosophical, cosmic themed lyrics. The lyrics I like are also often blasphemous and anti-religious like Dimmu Borgir. Sometimes I like lyrics that really don't have much specific meaning and you really need to find what it means to you, like In Flames. I'm big into melodeath and symphonic black metal.

For example,

As the video indicates, that song is about a guy living in the medieval ages who gives up being a priest after seeing the horrors of the crusades.

If I'm feeling political, I might listen to some RATM or something.

If I want something with no lyrics so I can just "feel" it without any particular idea planted into my head, I'll listen to techno, or sometimes even classical.
For example, I love this song:

But mainly it's melodic/symphonic black metal and death metal, it's 90% of my playlist.

My signature can lead to my music profile. I can be a pretentious bastard when it comes to music sometimes but I love many, many bands. I can't think of a song I want to post the meaning of so I'm just going to post this instrumental "Explosions" video and hope for the best:
Hope you like it. I'll probably post more bands if this thread develops. As of this post I'm listening to "People for Audio".
