I know that this has been a touchy subject these days but I would like to know the thoughts and opinions of every one on this subject. Should we let Muslims build a Mosque at ground zero and why or why not?

Are their laws which prohibits them from doing so? If not, what about public policy, public morals, public customs, public traditions, and others?

First of all, is it actually AT Ground Zero? I thought it was a couple of blocks away...
Second, it's not like they're building minarets there. It's a cultural center in one building with a prayer floor. Meh.
Third, that muslim gay bar needs to be built right next-door.

No it is not at ground zero, it is indeed about 2 blocks from where the north tower stood, and your correct that it's not actually a mosque it's more a cultural center, which happens to have a prayer floor, calling this a mosque is like calling a hospital which happens to have a chapel a church.

Secondly (or thirdly) they are doing nothing wrong, they purchased a building that had been abandoned for 9 years, suddenly when they announced they are putting a Muslim community center there, people tried to take it to court to have the building named a historical landmark. They call an imam who even the Bush administration called a prime example of moderate Islam, a radical Islamist. The whole thing is absurd, We live in a country that prides itself on our first amendment rights, one of which is the freedom of religion, so provided they have all the proper zoning permits (which they do) there is zero reason why they can not build a community center there.

So to answer the question of "Should we let them build it there?" Yes, because they are doing nothing illegal and it's extremely hypocritical to claim we support freedom of religion and then tell people where they can and can't build because we don't like their religion.

I'm of the opinion that no, there shouldn't be a mosque in that part of New York, but this is because I just don't see a reason to have mosques anywhere. Or churches for that matter. I oppose the construction of all religious buildings as a matter of general principle.

Specifically though in terms of the USA it's a no brainer. 1st Amendment, freedom of the religion, nothing more to be said really.

This is all very true. Pus there are other Mosques near by as well. People try to use sensitivity to justify no mosque being built however If the mosque isn't even at the sight, they need to get over it.

As long as any group is allowed to build cultural centres/centres of worship in according with existing building regulations, every group must be allowed to do so.
I am against Islam as much as I am against christianity because I think them to be the most dangerous religions of our time, but I'll fight for their right to build their stupid centre

How far can you associate? They're claiming that a radical sect of fundamentalist Muslims attacked the WTC, so no Muslims can have a building nearby. How would it be significantly different to say a radical sect of Abrahambic religionists attacked the WTC, so no mosques, synagogues, or churches can be nearby?

Also has anyone been following the Daily Show's coverage of Fox News' coverage? It's been grand.

How close is too close exactly? 2 blocks? 4 blocks? Maybe we shouldn't even allow them to build their center in New York City...or New York state for that matter. Where do we draw the line?

This shouldn't even be an issue. I am stunned that there are so many people who are willing to ignore the defining principles of my country for their own political convictions. Freedom of Religion for all.....except withing a ten block radius of ground zero.

I agree there is no line I truthfully wouldn't have much of a problem if it were on ground zero. But when it comes down to it this is a result of people thinking this is a christain country. Get over it it's not!

Well with the same reasoning, we could all complain not to build (non catholic) churches next to (I mean a couple of blocks away) playgrounds or other child related places because of the actions of Catholic priests. Just because they believe in the same god as the assholes responsible does not mean we can deny them the right to exercise their religion. You don't see people stopping the building of Baptist churches because Catholic priests molested some children so why should we deny the building of a cultural center which emphasizes a little more on Islam than other religions. Its easy for me. My basic feelings about freedom gives them the right so I think we should let them.

Yeah I do believe that they shouldn't build churches near schools or playgrounds.

I do not support this nonsense, it is not of my damn business so I shouldn't tell anyone where can they buy proprety and build a mosque, it is still under freedom of religion and they should have he freedom to do it and not be descriminated based on religion. If that placed ws intended for instance for a museum of National interest or something of the sort, then the case would be different but it isn't, so that is that. Or else we would have to ban any religious center.

Thunderf00ts video on this topic may as well have been made by the BNP.
Indeed. I'm becoming a bit weary of his over-enthusiasm. I can almost feel the spittle that passes over his angry, quivering lips spray out my speakers. The guy has become irrational over it.

I do not fathom where these Tea Partiests, or just outside-of-newyorkers in general got the idea that they were in any way involved in this debate, no less Tea Party groups bussing people to new york to spew their hatred and anti-islam whatchymacallit. How far away is enough? First its too blocks, then its two miles, next thing you know no mosques in America period. The Tea Party are guiseing as being the protectors of patriotism and how that they are the true americans to forward their racist agenda. This issue may seem harmless, but should we as a people let this happen in America, it will go against our bill of rights, the ideals of some of our first settlers and will create momentum for a huge anti-islam movement.

This is one step to close to religious persecution, one step too close to a halocaust, one step too close to a genocide. The mere fact that this is a debate is painful to me.

I hate islam, I hate all religion.... and I hate DISCRIMINATION. We must put the true american values first before some islamaphobic somethingorother.

Sorry for my novice rant. I'm new here.

The amount of Fox Noise hate spin revolving around it has me sick enough to not only support this Muslim center/mosque, but to hope that they move it closer to ground zero. Like right across the street with a big ol' sign hanging on the front of it that reads "Suck it haters!"

This is exactly the kind of hatred and extreme reaction the terrorists on those flights were expecting Americans would have. They said America was anti-islam and a threat to all Muslims. Good job my fellow countrymen! You've assured that the terrorists did not hijack those planes, flew them into the towers, effectively killing everyone on board and thousands inside the buildings and ultimately themselves in vain. Mission accomplished. :(

Edit: and now we have another mosque incident.
