"Militant" Atheism

I love how as soon as atheists begin to write books and verbally oppose religious idea they are immediately labeled as "militant". I've never been very fond of political correctness, which is meant to tip-toe around and avoid causing offense, I am however concerned with actual correctness, and unless an atheist is militarily restricting the theistic beliefs of others, it would be incorrect to call him "militant".

I think this discrepancy needs to be pointed out more often, and I find the best way to do this is to ask someone to consider the phrase "militant Islam".

It's a word game. By labeling people 'militant' those who aren't part of the debate or know jack about what's going on hear that word and get scared. That' is the only reason its being used. Those who chose to use that word are either deluded or fully aware of what they are doing and more than happy to drag the word 'atheism' through the mud.

OH! So is evolution right?

Of course, that's why evolutionists worship their prophet darwin

I'd go on, but I can't stop laughing long enough to type any more

Hahaha! The first time someone said 'Evolution is a religion!' I actually face palmed so hard it hurt!

It's meant to be synonymous with 'aggressive', but you're right, it's the wrong term. Pushy, closed-minded, philosophically aggressive, or just plain annoying would be a better choice of description, depending on the atheist in question. I can think of one former atheist that earned all of those titles, and possibly more.

I actually double face palmed when I heard :"It takes more faith NOT to believe in god than to believe" more or less the same as "Atheism is a religion"

The best comment to show how ridiculous this is, that I have ever heard came from a YT user...I believe her name is "atheistblindchick" or something like that. She said that by the same logic she is an "aphilatelist"..that is, her hobby is NOT to collect stamps.
I thought (and still think) that was pure genius.

Of course, people use all those terms against atheists, and anyone else who is smarter (and better looking) than them, who tends to kick their asses on the issues. It is easier than just admitting that you are wrong, or at least that the other guy is making stronger points than you are. ;)

Perhaps, but I wasn't talking about the argument. I was thinking more along the lines of how the issue is approached.

You might not have been, but that is certainly how it is used. When someone's argument is weak, they tend to whine about "tone" and "how the issue is approached." You know, like claiming that someone who is correcting a person is just being a big old meanie.
