So... uhm... yeah....Mexico sucks.

Miguel Suarez, a friend of Shabazz, told The Associated Press last week that the fight broke out after the owner of the bar demanded that the two men pay 15,000 pesos (USD $1250 aprox) for the time they spent drinking at the bar. He said he found Shabazz outside the bar and took him to a hospital where he died.

Currency conversion and emphasis mine.

Now, while the news is sad enough, my question is:

Taking into account everything you know about my country, how do you feel about coming to Mexico for vacation/studies/residence/business/etc...?

Best regards

Ed.

My wife is Mexican and I'm really looking forward to going to Mexico for the ninth time this Christmas. Your country is full of lovely people, amazing scenery and places of architectural and historic interest.

I am not trying to trivialise your country's problems. They are serious and it is currently a more dangerous place than many others but it it's far from the only place where customers get ridiculously overcharged at night spots near tourist traps and beaten up if they don't pay. It's also not the only place with a stark contrast between the rich and poor. These are problems that Mexico does need to address but they are not unique to Mexico.

I blame a lot of your country's current ills on the idiotic escalation of the "war on drugs" that Calderón started. If it weren't for US demand for illegal drugs, your country would likely be a far safer place... The other key thing that needs to change in Mexico in my eyes is the culture of bribery and corrupt officialdom, and the amazing disregard for regulations.

In the end though there is also a great deal of warmth and hospitality to be found, and your country has such a rich heritage. Despite its problems, I look forward to visiting each time and am sad when I leave.

Would anyone outside his immidiate circle care if he wasn't the grandson of some famous bloke?

I would like to visit Mexico and the article wouldn't bother me as I wouldn't want to go to Mexico City.
Still I think as 'westerly' touri one needs to always expect higher prices.

Thx for your 'appetiser' Mr Funny :)
