Major conflicts possible?

I was just watching a bunch of Stargate SG1 episodes (a few weeks before exams, what can you do? ;) ) and in one of the episodes (Season 9 Episode 10: The Fourth Horseman: Part 1) one character talks about the Ori (a powerful "race" that want to be worshipped as gods) and the Alterans/Ancients (same, but they do not want to be worshipped nor do they worship anything, they "believe, for want of a better word, in science". In other words, they're Atheists.). The Ori turned totally Fundamentalist and then started wiping out the Ancients because of their religious views.

Anyone think that this might be a possibility in the real world? Could it be that religious people will try to destroy non-religious or those of other religions in an all-out confrontation?

It makes me think of that one video by (I believe it was) Thunderf00t where he cut in a scene from a movie. In it, the US President launches the nukes on an unspecified enemy and then says "The nukes are flying. Hallelujah, hallelujah!"

Conflicts between different religious groups have been occuring for... probably since religion existed.

Open worldwide war between the religious and the non-religious? Unlikely, I think. And if it happens, at least Earths religious leaders have no telekinetic powers.

And remember that in a sense the Ori were right. After their ascension they did fit the definition of gods, and what they claimed about therir power was actually true.

The problem is that all out war would be diffficult since it is not easy to distiguish an atheist from a christian, there is no atheist country, or atheist race, we atheists dont wear any distinguishing tatoos, or do some strange ritual, so all out war I believe is out of the quetsion.

Persecution however, witch hunts and represion have happenede to us and could happen aggain, in the west we can express aour opinions, but you just try declaring there is no alah in some parts of the middle east and you get killed that very day. That is what we have to be weary aggainst, persecution.

Were any one country to open fire on another over religion specifically, the attacking country would likely be bombarded with shells for days until entire cities lied in ruin and they found their political leaders killed and replaced by a more "neutral" party.

Wait...That already happened.

Saddam Hussein harboring a religious fundamentalist group that lead an assault on American soil was captured and killed following an invasion on Iraq that continues to this day.

Though the general claim is that religions are responsible for so many death throughout history, factually wars are started by leaders or politicians who want to claim power, be in power, show power or extend their power.
Religion is a twisted social occurence, a falicy, and a tool used by leaders to rally the masses.

You can see it today in Iran and their holy political crusade against evil western countries and USA in particular, or even better in Libya where Gadaffi occosianally went on his national TV network during this Asian Lent screaming Quran quotes, Holy war and jihad.

In fact, ... the fact that Iran singled out the USA as political enemy actually shows that faith in the scripture of Quran has got nothing to do with it. Sure it is based on a few decades of inter-political hate between the two countries ... BUT that is just the point! Why should the USA be the main target for religious Islamic hate? BECAUSE they are the strongest non-islamic country in the world! And THAT fact alone shows you that religion is a failure based on politics, not on faith. Because any other non-islamic country could have been singled out. But the mere fact Iran singled out the USA as enemy, ... shows they have political motives.

So the social failure named religion is used as a political tool to rally the masses behind a countries political leaders. And in the case of Iran, the true power lays with the religious leaders anyway.

USA is not evil, perse, nor is religion evil perse, ... the intend of political leaders ARE evil, if they cry hell, war and havoc.

It once again shows religion to be a social failure, not worth keeping in a world, with its humans, that only wants to feed it children and live in peace.

Probably not, no.

Yeah, sounds like that drama queen alright.

Instead they try tricks like mind manipulation and distortion of knowledge. <------ That one is far more likely to occur at least in my opinion.

Well it's happened already really... Blasphemy laws and all that are a thing in the past in the West. Now I don't mean to tempt fate and say that those things will never happen again or that no one wants them to, but there definitely has been progress in this issue over time. We're just waiting for the Middle East to do the same. It'll be harder to achieve over there (not that it was in anyway easy over here) because now they think it's a battle of cultures. Islam vs. Them. They also think the Westerners purposely come over there to indoctrinate and poison their children, which isn't true, but it is true to say that the youth are changing.

People are already trying to wipe out people who disagree with them. They have been for a LONG time.
Examples
America vs. terrorism
America vs. Communism
Nazi regime vs. The world
Mao Zedong vs. Capitalism
