The chat was just attacked and now it's straight up jacked and there isn't anyone around who knows what to do.

Help.

Holy fucking shit-
When I clicked it my webpage started flooding with tab openings! O.O

I'm going to say that someone's DDoSing us majorly - but that webpage error I got took me a bit to take down. We need the Techies on it STAT.

Chat works like it should for me.

DDOS = distributed denial of service -> makes websites and services totally unreachable. And since you can post here, it's not a (D)DOS attack.

Sounds like the work of a bugged or malicious script to me, rather than a DoS attack.

Still that aside, chat seems fine now.

OGjimkenobi: A bit more detail would be appreciated next time :)

)O( Hytegia )O:) What you're describing would be a problem on Mibbit. Not a lot anyone on here could have done about it.

Having looked at the logs (I also accidently left my irc client open at work, that's why people thought I was around) it would appear someone with a botnet of some description joined the server on multiple IP addresses and spammed the server. I would go as far as to suggest that our channel wasn't the only one affected.

I think the reason for the large number of tabs was that each of these users may have been privately messaging everyone in each room as well.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the attack, there would have been little any of us could have done except put the channel into moderation mode.

Hytegia's description of DoS seems accurate to me based on what was known prior to Spork's response. The chat room is a service by itself. Just because the "attack" didn't shut down the entire site doesn't mean LoR didn't suffer from a service shutdown by flooding.

The LoR site and the server it is on was not attacked. I would have gotten alerts from my monitoring scripts and shznit. Whoever it was, was 'attacking' the IRC chat room only, which is hosted on oftc.net.
