Hey guys and girls,

So I've been on here for a couple of days now and thought it was about time to formally introduce myself and tell you guys a bit about myself. My name is James and my youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/YesIamJames?feature=mhum

I was brought up Christian (C of E) and my great grandfather was a priest. He was a great man though, he believed in evolution and apparently admitted that genesis was bull shit. Since I could talk I had a very strong interest in science, my favorite present as a kid was "the way things work" which really spurred my imagination and curiosity. By 12 I believed in God but just thought of Jesus as a wise man. It wasn't until I was about 17 when I became agnostic and at 22 I rejected the belief in anything supernatural.

I began speaking out against religion when I joined a site called Yedda (now aolanswers). Christianity in England is pretty liberal and I was absolutely shocked at how fundamentalist and hateful some of the people on there were. I received comments "like all atheists want to do is reenact the holocaust" and "atheists are the least educated liars who ever ran a concentration camp under the atheists, Hitler, Mengele, and Hess. All atheists are bloodthirsty tyrants". Even many people on the site who I considered rational rejected evolution. It was this which triggered me to really start researching religion and the more I researched the more damaging I realized religion is.

http://aolanswers.com/people/1866111145210 (one of the worst creationist trolls on there)

I've been speaking out about religion and irrationality ever since. At the moment I'm just a dogs body but I'd love to get a job in science in the future and hopefully get an income from Youtube as well (long way off yet).

Very nice to (formally) meet you James. ;)

I have found Christianity in Canada is (generally) quite liberal also, and I grew up in a staunchly Catholic household that supported Evolution. Videos and comments shock me all the time, too.

Welcome.

Have fun.

Welcome aboard, James!

It was also the more extreme fundies that really ended me up here. Had they not been around, I'd probably just been uninterested in the subject of religion. But now here I am, on a "skeptic" site, making comments and videos against religion and fundamentalism.

It's good fun, though, so I guess I ought to thank those fundies. :)

Anyway, check out our chatroom someday, it's good fun.

Enjoy your stay!

Gotta echo Gnug, fundies can torpedo one's hope for humanity. Just have to keep busy with our bailing buckets of truth and reason before our ship sinks!

Hehe, quite.

It's actually quite comforting to hang around on a site like this, where one is surrounded by a fair amount of reason. :)
That terrible torpedo of fiery fundamentalism shall hit an indestructible wall of logic here, in this sanctuary of sensible souls... or something.
