Wow... I am so sorry to hear about this injustice, and I am quite outraged myself even though I'm not affected by it. The tutor should have remained objective, taking a side on an issue like that is simply abusing your position and especcially when him/her went to such extremes. I hope this tutor faces some sort of consequences.

Simply put, it is wrong. Her tutor should not have done that.

It certainly offends me.

While I think the whole incident is rather stupid, I can see one standpoint from which the tutor's actions are somewhat understandable. They perhaps felt that the whole discussion was getting out of hand, and the solution was to remove the cause (biased perspective, maybe?)... Bah. I feel like I'm trying to defend them, when I'm not - just looking for possible rationales.

Why did religion come up in a maths class, anyway? And why would the teacher have let such an off-topic discussion go so far (back to the guess that they felt they had lost control of the situation, and needed to do something to regain it).

As an aside, I assume this was in the UK - in London? I'm rather surprised - I don't remember anything approaching religious discussion coming about in classes when I was at college (Neasden, London) or university (Manchester) here. And it's only a very small minority (4 or 5, perhaps) of the people I know who might consider taking such a strongly religious stance....maybe I'm just lucky!

Re: Kicked Out For Saying

With respect to this issue. Your girlfriend is brave to state that which she adheres to. The only problem that I see with how she did it is that she did state it in a place where most of the population has a different point of view. It is addicting to be correct, but at the same time, it's more prudent to do so in a forum which tolerates diverging views. This is reality and it is unfair to the enlightened.

In short, know one's enemy, in order to prepare and ensure a killing blow.

If I were in the position of those who kicked her out, I guess they did so, because they did not want such way of thinking to lessen or stricken their power. I do hope your girlfriend will calmly approach future situations and that those who kicked her out will be sorry for doing so. Loosing a brilliant mind is a loss for the school.

If I put myself in your girlfriend's point of view, then if given the chance, I would recall this situation and learn from it.

Can no-one see that as soon as a position has to be protected from debate by violence and censorship, it's lost the game?

Not everyone shares the same point of view with respect to a certain issue. It is reasonable to put one self in the other person's shoes, so to speak, in order to understand the reason why they think that way.

-oOo-

I wish both of you luck.

Re: Kicked Out For Saying

My usual response to things like this is to plead ignorance. Instead of saying that there is no god, which is your right, but not what I believe so much. I'd say "I don't think there's one, do you? Why?". I've found that there's no real answer to that.

If they go into the Big Bang origins argument (The Kalam Cosmological Argument?) just wait for them to finish and say "Ooooh, it might be Allah".

In the end though, no matter what argument you have. It's disgusting that she is not allowed to voice her opinion. Saying "There is no god" is more justified than saying "There is a god". Whilst absence of evidence does not necessarily denote evidence of absence, absence of evidence is closer to evidence of absence than presence and completely justifies any disbelief and denial.

Re: Kicked Out For Saying

That is just stupid and illogical. It is as offensive as saying he does exist, or that Santa does. People should be allowed to state what they believe, especially when it's opposite, is said without any offense.
