So, where do you stand on this and Assange overall?
If you are pro- Wikileaks (or perhaps whistleblowers in general), has this, and the events leading up to it, coloured your opinion? If so, how come?

Supplimental question: Is demagoguery ever worthwhile?

I think it is nonsense. Sweden should have given him immunity from extradition to the US, and Assange should have been carted off to Sweden.

In all irony, I eagerly await how they plan to get him out of the Embassy.

Asylum or not - the second he steps off the property or the space above the property above a certain height (usually used for aerial surveillance and air-space authority above American Embassy charters) he's fair game.

Actually, no. Vehicles also count as "sovereign territory" for the purposes of diplomatic affairs. Theoretically, the Ecuadoran embassy could put up a large plastic tube from the door to a car parked on the street, and claim that the tube constitutes part of their embassy.

I don't think that the UK is going to approve a plastic tubing to get a criminal out of the country as sovereign territory. Even then, they'd still have to get him on the plane.
Unless you can see Mister Assange diving into a vehicle. And any aggression from your own embassy's defensive guards/forces are considered acts of war and revocation of diplomatic immunity, so there's no way that they're going to be able to beat their way to the car. Or bust through road blocks.
It's a wavery line, this business is. Which is why I said that I'm interested in seeing how this will unfold.

Couldn't care less if he went free or got the Mussolini Surprise, life goes on, the war goes on, etc

Still, at least I bumped your thread

So I've heard he isn't even charged with anything. He's just wanted for questioning, and yet Sweden isn't exactly affirming that handing him over to the lawless US (land of indefinite detentions, torture, 2 tiered justice, execution of US citizens without trial...) isn't part of the plan. I mean that's a serious risk to fall into the US's hands, and I'd consider it a form of unusual punishment by Sweden if they did so. If I were Assange I'd probably be taking the same measures unless I could be sure that the US's interest weren't the end goal in this.

It would have been much more cost-effective to pay two investigators in cooperation with the British government to come to the UK and do their questioning there.

Basically it's a bunch of animals fighting for Assange. Sweden wants to prosecute him for all sorts of sexual assault, including slapping his dick onto some chick's belly; the US obviously want him for interrogation; and the UK is just being a bunch of dicks who want to break international treaties and laws and invade that place.

That's the last thing they want - or they would have done it already.

If he somehow managed to dive into the trunk, he's safe. A review of the law shows that a car can be stopped and the passengers identified - but it can't be searched.
Plus, there's no parking lot on the Embassy's land.

You mean the UK doesn't want his ass? I'm pretty sure they've publicly declared that they have those intentions.

They want him - but there's a good reason you don't barge in an Embassy.
The second you do, you not only face sanctions but you also discredit the ability to call foul when someone does the likewise to your own Embassy on foreign soil.

There's a reason that people play by the rules.

I know. We're actually on the same page here. I agree. The UK want his ass and want to invade that embassy but they know they cannot. I was just implying that these were their intentions.

A thread is bumped when it begins to languish.
Except when I bumped yours earlier, sure.
If you want to troll, little bird, go here.
No, I wanted to contribute my opinion of indifference about Assange and did so, if I insulted the quality of your thread in the mean time that wasn't intended, but I can't control how you interpret internet boards. And it is a valid position in that I'm not convinced that he's relative anymore after all the initial media drama went by, and if anything he's a political bargaining chip between countries now.

arg-fallbackName="Prolescum"/>
The term you're looking for is responded to or replied to; you can't "bump" a thread that, due in no small part to it being less than 24 hours old at the time of your post (incidentally barely 3 hours after the previous one), was still in the "new posts" category, ergo the assumption (not without precedent) that you were merely attempting to provoke other posters. Your opinion on Assange wasn't being addressed.

If you would like to discuss it further, feel free to send me a message lest this thread receive a longevity it may not deserve.

While we're all looking at Julian, what's going on with Bradely Manning? Surely there is some hypocrisy there.

On who's part?

The general social media. Julian has become a celebrity while Manning has been locked up in a military prison for a few years...

Some very pertinent information has come from Wikileaks, but also a lot of drivel. Maybe Wikileaks should campaign a bit more for justice?
