Is a like option doable?

When I read certain posts, I have this nagging compulsion to click like because I find their post germane to the issue raised. I, therefore, ask if this option can be implemented. Liken it to a facebook wallpost like option. Hehe.

Do not do anything with facebook. It is evil.

I just think it is a good idea. If not facebook, liken it to youtube where there is a like and dislike function. ^-^ Consequently, such a function may serve as a metric with respect to a person's post.

Past experience from other boards leads me to believe that such a system doesn't much help with community spirit but is a constant source of arguments and infighting. I like the idea, but not really the application in practice.

Even if independent from facebook, I still think it is a good idea. This could lead to like and dislike spamming like youtube had a couple of years ago. Further, it could also cause people to act in ways which is not beneficial to the forum.

I would rather see people writing a post, however short, to express their approval or disapproval of a given post. A like button would make it all too easy to simply click a button rather than respond which would erode the purpose of a forum unnecessarily.

It's the Rep thing again. There was (for the most part, anyway) a general consensus that it would be a bad idea:

I see. I did a prior search before posting this thread, while not finding a similar thread akin to this, I didn't realize that an old topic already exists which uses a different keyword, rep points. While I don't agree with the conclusion of that thread, I am inclined not to pursue this option if the majority believes that it is not a good idea.

This.

Although I love how I can click "Like" to stuff on Facebook, I wouldn't want something similar on the forum. Same goes for rep points, thread ratings and other reward systems. They would make the forum a playground for competition, losing the focus on having genuine discussions.

There's a couple of options I can think of to get around the cons of a rep system. Firstly, another forum I post on simply removed negative repping, so you can only +1 posts. Or there's the system they use on the conceptart.org forums which is a 'thank' system, where users can thank individual posts if they found them useful or interesting. I'm a bit meh about a rep system in general, I dont think it'll add anything but I too get the overwhelming urge to 'like' things. Facebook has moved into my brain :(

"likes" is pretty dumb to have. Especially on a forum where we're supposed to have a free exchange of ideas and discussions.
If someone is wrong, it should be shown by having their arguments deconstructed, not by the opponent having more likes. It is just a dumb appeal to majority.
It is bad enough to have half of a forum to gang up on a single person.

^^ I guess we should stick to quoting posts that we like instead? ;)

I'm not really opposed to a "like" or rep feature. I think problems occur with negative or "dislike" functions, but then again I've never ran a forum before so my opinion may be moot.

You could have a 'like' function only and attach the 'likes' to the post instead of the person. I don't think it would be very useful unless there was a way to see the most popular posts (the most likes in a time period, such as yesterday or all time).
