This is just a reminder that September 21, 2012 is the designated International Day of Peace.

Choose your favorite symbol. And remember whatever your belief or non-belief celebrate safely.

Wonder how many people will die in Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, Mexico, Columbia and other areas during that day while people celebrate. Because, you know, UN members such as the United States, Syria, Israel really make an effort to adhere to calls for ceasefire and so do insurgent groups.

Seriously, is this meant to help anyone, or is it just a superficial stroking of idealism by the UN and an occasion for bland ceremonies by hypocritical governments that couldn't care less about doves and peace symbols? I can see its uses in being used to host events from children around the world and to pressure for chances to send aid, though one would think this was already the standard operation year round.

If your goal is peace then there is much much more work still to be done and such a vacuous celebration is a silly waste.

Call me a cynic if you wish, but I don't think international peace will ever be reached. So long as there are resources to compete for, historic national conflicts and rivalries, racial and religious division, dictators, and so on; peace will not happen. I'm not very optimistic about our chances of eradicating these things, especially not via peaceful means...

I'm the cynic here make no mistake. I just don't see why this should be a big deal or celebrated. Sure we've come far today compared to the wars and atrocities of centuries before our time, and that may be worth celebrating, but this just seems like a sort of insult to the people that are still suffering from war, there is no International Day of Peace for them. Also I'd argue that for many of us, or at least in my case, the peace I enjoy isn't the result of good will and pacifism, it's the product of my countrys first world status, achieved largely by imperialism at the cost of many, many other people.

Global awareness perhaps? It could be used to point towards the more war ravaged areas.

I never stated that International Peace would be a given or even achievable.

Perhaps you should try a deed of good will and see how it makes you feel.

Yep...... It's time to head back to the Moon, Mars, and possibly beyond.

Indeed, you just posted some clip art and wished safe celebration with less apparent enthusiasm than the I'd expect to see for a superficial hallmark holiday. If your goal is to spread attention for war torn areas I'd recommend copy/pasting links to sites like http://www.aljazeera.com perhaps, rather than bing.net peace symbols? I dunno just an idea. Either way it is at least passingly of interest to learn about a UN holiday for knowledge sake.
