I saw a Creationist face-to-face! OMG OMFG

I was cashiering today, and a dowdy looking man in his 50's came through my line. I recognized him, he was our bus driver when I was with the UofO Marching Band. He bought only one item http://www.amazon.com/Link-Uncoveri...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243834628&sr=8-2 (Nobody buys only one item at Costco!)

"Oh, is that about Ida?" I asked him.

"yup", he slobbered. "It was published so fast after they found the fossil, someone must have had this book mostly written already and was waiting for a fossil to put it with."

I gave him a deadpan stare, but I value employment and thus held my tongue. But I DIDN'T tell him to have a nice day! muahahaha!!

Makes me wish I was in the line instead of working. I would have melted his face.

Thats just sad. Creationist or not, they all have a right to a nice day, why don't you wish him one regardless of his beliefs? You are exactly the person who gives atheists a bad face... Sad...

I wouldn't go that far. Although I don't even see anything wrong with what the guy said - he's probably at least half right. While the book may not have been quite 'ready to go' it certainly is one of those rush jobs meant to take advantage of media hype - You just can't publish a good book in 3 or 4 weeks. Also, for a creationist to buy the hardcover version of a book that supports evolution seems quite odd to me.

I feel the whole Ida deal is incredibly overblown, and that's coming from someone who has studied evolution deeply and believes in it. I'm not sure what else this guy said that made you believe he was an evil creationist or something but what you quoted him on is hardly damning.

Not wishing him a nice day is not restricting his right. How do you equate that to the requirement for wishing him a nice day? In his mind, at the time, wishing it was condoning his behavior and or beliefs. Seems like he did not do so, so he decided to not encourage.

heh I didn't expect to be told off over that. I suppose sarcasm is lost over the internet; I was perfectly courteous to him even though I didn't wish him a nice day. Irmerk is right, in the context of our encounter anything but the smile I gave him would have seemed like a tacit endorsement.

as for the man damning himself, body language and tone of voice adds to communication. I can't reproduce that on the internet unfortunately.

I was just joking, really. :p

I met a creationist today too. She was in my media arts class. I was working on a refutation video and she told me that she was a YEC. My first though was "Hell yeah, I'm so ready for this debate" but she immediately tried to defuse it. She told me she would be respectful of my beliefs. Because she wasn't willing to debate the only thing I managed to get in was that it's not an issue of belief it's an issue of science.

Is meeting a creationist face-to-face really that rare for some people? My God, we have them in droves in Texas.

In other news, I think I saw a nun today. I've never seen a nun in real life. It blew my mind.

heh I remember the first time I saw a nun. I was raised Catholic, and we were visiting Knock Shrine in Ireland. (stunningly beautiful place) Nuns are usually cloistered, but we got to talk to some 'cuz we were trying to become part of some holy club they lorded over. They would only peek out through a small portal in the door of their cloister, and sent us off to confession! I had to say 3 Hail Mary's and 5 Lord's Prayers or something like that.

Ah indeed, sarcasm is lost. I was referring to george carlin "And people always wish me a good day. Well what if I don't want a fuckin good day"

Wow, I used to see nuns all the time. Had two teach me in 2nd and 4th grade.

I'm sure I've met more YEC's, but I've never known it - I've never actually spoken to one in real life (and known it). They don't wear funny costumes sadly so it makes it hard.

When I was student teaching I found out that one of my colleagues was a creationist. It absolutely stunned me because I respected the guy. I thought, "fair enough" I still liked the guy, so I said, "what's your proof?" He gave me a copy of Michael Behe's book, and I wrote a point by point refutation of it. I gave him the book back, along with my refutation, which he refused to read. After that point, we stopped being friends. The fact that he would refuse to read evidence to the contrary utterly destroyed him in my eyes as an honest individual and placed him firmly in the category of fanatic. We maintained a cordial relationship, but that was the extent of it.

Never met a YEC before, at least not to my knowledge, and I hope to keep it that way. I did debate a moon hoaxer once... good times. And I was taught by nuns in nursery school :) . They are becoming rarer, though.
