I Live Off Soda: Why Aren't I Dead?

Simple question.

For the last forever, exempting PT sessions, excursions into hot and sandy areas, and boot-camp - from ever sense I can remember I have basically abstained from water and drank nothing but Dr. Pepper day in and day out.

And, I'm talking long, long, long periods of time sometimes between actually drinking WATER.

We can talk about an addiction later - what I'm curious about is how can my body actually handle simply living off of Dr. Pepper with no noticable life-threatening health effects that have not been afforded to me through the intake of water. I'm not dehydrated, or any of that fun nonsense.

quick question.

has your diet (including eaten) completely been switched to dr pepper?

Not sure if this is a joke -
but I eat "American Healthy" (Burgers, Pizza, but with the moderation of a salad to make myself feel better) and work out on a regular basis.

Yes, I have a monsterous metabolism.

I'd be concerned about having energy derived only from sugar, as (to my understanding) your body will then come to rely on it, to the detriment of other sources (carbohydrates, protein etc). I'd also be concerned about lacking certain vitamins, and the probable abundance of food preservatives taken in.

Could be a basic misunderstanding on my part, though; you may in fact have inadvertently discovered immortality syrup.

You can get hydrated from beverages and even some foods, you don't need to drink 90% pure water at one specific time (what you generaly mention as drinking water) to satisfy your H2O needs.
Altough a sugary diet isn't quiet healthy either and may cause you diabetes later in life eve tough it won't kill you right now.

edit: I forget that specific word to make sense.

Dr. Pepper is, indeed, the nectar of the gods. Do you fellows have it over in the UK?
And, as to Sugar need - I don't need sugar for energy, but I am quite addicted to caffeine. I'd rather drop smoking and immediately suffer a hangover than Caffeine withdrawal at this point.

Hm.
Alright. I am literally drinking it 24/7/365 if I can help it - and, after actually reviewing the back label I have determined that Carbonated Water is basically water with some fizzy nonsense in it.

I was wondering if all the Sodium would somehow cancel that out, or whatnot. I'm no biological scientist or dietician.

Neither am I, but I don't think that the sodium would cancel that out. After all Dr Pepper is a beverage with the purpouse of satisfying thirst and cool down, and I don't think it would be quite as effective on that if it dehydrated you instead.

How do you know you're not dead?

Remember the 6th Sense? :p

You'd need to drink 24 liters or over 6 gallons of Dr. Pepper per day to get the daily recommended amount of sodium. So no, it doesn't cancel out all the water you're drinking.

PS. Dr. Pepper is my favourite non-alcoholic beverage. We have it here in Finland.

Today, I bought one. A benefit that became apparent moments after opening the can was "every pack gets two free mobile minutes".

I learned that the expiry date for the contents exceeds the duration of the competition considerably.

I can report no overall difference in my life expectancy as of yet.

That's ridiculous.
They would never hold that contest in America, because there would already be some 14 year old kid running an algorythm in his basement and generating random numbers for free cellphone time.

ANYHOW yeah. I've also only had a cold once and never a case of the Flu - I can only come to the conclusion that it must be the Dr. Pepper that I have been guzzling down since as long as I can remember.

I'm currently siphoning through around a liter of Dr. Pepper every day and a half or so.

That's how much beer I drink... you need to buck up, junior.

Surely you mean 4-5 liters, right?

Let's do math:

A liter is around 34 ounces. A liter every day and a half is 68 ounces in three days. That's a little less than 23 ounces a day. That's a little less than an eight ounce serving with each meal. That's not living off soda, that's having a normal-sized drink to wash down your meal.

I knew a guy who lived off of coffee. He would brew a 12-cup pot of coffee first thing in the morning... and poured the WHOLE THING INTO A 54-OUNCE MUG! That would last until lunch, and then he'd have A SECOND WHOLE POT OF COFFEE! Every weekday he'd have a pot of coffee for breakfast, a pot of coffee for lunch, and cheap whiskey and Taco Bell for dinner. And he thought his ulcer was caused by "stress"... Fucker was drinking almost a gallon of coffee every day.

Was the coffee diluted? I mean someone could run 5 to 6 cups of coffee through one of those Kurig K-Cups. By the time the second or third cup is started you are basically drinking warm/hot water.

Nope... he added extra grounds to the coffee maker. He'd complain if someone else made the coffee and it wasn't strong enough for him. No milk or sugar either, just straight black coffee in a 54-ounce insulated mug from a gas station.

The high fructose content of Dr Pepper is the concern from what I understand. In particular, the health concern regarding the liver should be noted.
