Oh hey Joe, you should totally join the LoR chatroom!

Not that it's full of activity all the time, but still...

And I can also recommend reading cracked.com. They've got a huge pile of interesting articles which are also entertaining to read.

:)

Personally, I get a lot of "social energy" online, like in the LoR chatroom, and from multiplayer games
This is how I dealt with it. LoR chatroom, LoR forums. Lots of online multiplayer video games. Steam has a whole set of free to play mmorpgs now. Global agenda is pretty good, though I paid like $5 for an actual copy during a sale.

I also played borderlands and listened to books on tape (err, mp3). Also fallout 3, but just listened to "galaxy news radio" or whatever, which has about 11 tracks of oldies music that comes with the game (it's an in-game radio station).

Also I have a cousin who is my age. We semi-regularly voice chat and play some multiplayer game online together (right now: battlefield 3 PC).

Oblivion is $6.24 today on steam (GOTY, and why not do GOTY for $1.24 extra?)... With mods you can probably get quite a lot of fun/time spent on that. Personally didn't care for oblivion much, but then I was busy at the time I borrowed it.

It is dead at times, yes, but not always. Although I couldn't say at which hours it's active.

When I get home from work, I turn on IRC, join the chatroom and don't turn it off again until I go to bed. During that time there's a lot of idling, of course, but I usually check back to the room frequently.
Once I see activity, I often jump in and join the conversation or start one myself.

Funny how that works. People come in, see that there's no one there, and leave. We get a lot of people in and out, frequently - they just don't stay around to talk for some reason.

Replace "Bar" with "Any other place people happen to gather."

Do people gather where everything is free?

Yes at parks there is always people doing exercise, a pair of tennis shoes is the entrance fee and you can make some friends, find people to talk to also, get active on that twiter, facebook account, there you can find out who is doing what near you, free concerts (again parks) museums usually have a free day, I'd advise against bars, since people usually go there with friends already, and are not really that fun. Universities and library give you a place to find like minded individuals that are strapped for cash and don't expect you to join them on the yacht club.

I Had horrible deppresion for 3 years, my advice is DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO AVOID IT seriously, community work, go help the local ymca hobo feeding day or something, but go out every day, volunteering for stuff will be better for you thna staying home

I hope you feel better soon.

ImprobableJoe,

You seem intelligent, opinionated and well educated. Start a blog. Then whore yourself out to Facebook and Crapspace strangers to get as many e-friends as possible. Then post a link to each article you write so all your new e-friends will visit the blog. Once you get enough traffic to your site you can start to advertise. It is not a get rich quick scheme, but it is a way to make extra cash for basically to voicing your opinion.

It's not money.
It's meeting people.
