Hello/Hola/Salut/Tchuss(or even Hallo... *AHEM*)/Ciao

Hello all,

I did science-based subjects at A-Level at school and started to study Engineering at university but dropped out. I've since returned to family tradition somewhat (my dad was a French teacher) by completing a degree in Modern Languages with the Open University but have retained my love of science. Having become increasingly aware of creationism, climate change denialism and other non-scientific craziness over the last few years, I came acrossThunderf00t's "Why do people laugh at creationists?" series last year (or was it late 2008... Hmmm... No matter.). From there I found AronRa, AndromedasWake, dprjones et al on YouTube and started to visit skeptical blogs and listen to skeptical podcasts like SGU and Skeptics with a K.

I've recently decided to become a more active participant in these communities and have started commenting on blogs and attended my first "Skeptics in the Pub" meeting this month. As an extension to that, here I am!!

Rob.

Hmm... I should perhaps say that my degree was in Spanish and French. "Tchà¼ss" of course means bye/see you in German not hello...

I had wondered why Tschuess was written in place or Hallo or Guten Tag (corrected my appalling German).

Welcome to the boards fellow sCeptic.

0) Hi. I already have a funny uncle (though his wife is even funnier - I love dry humor), so I'll call you Rob.
1) It's spelled "Tschà¼ss".
2) The other one is spelled "Guten Tag", and it's very, very formal.

Hahaha! Remind me never to try to look clever based on stuff I learned in school nearly 20 years ago! :D

I did get an A in my GCSE German, you know...

As to the name... it's from a song I like by Pet Shop Boys. It's been my internet alias for about 15 years and I see no reason to change it. If you see someone called Your Funny Uncle (sometimes shortened to funnyunc) on the internet the chances are it's me. Actually as of this month I actually AM someone's uncle for the first time, but that's another story...

Corrected my terrible German, I only got a B at GCSE. :D

As an aside; If you want to get accented letters on an English keyboard you can use ASCII codes. If you're using Windows you hold down Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad. For example Alt+0252 gives you à¼. I'm pretty sure you can do something similar on other operating systems too but I can't remember how off the top of my head.

I've never tried on my laptop cos the numpad is all mixed up with the keyboard, I'll give it a try though.

Tschà¼ss

Hell yeahh, now I have to start remembering the codes. lol At least half the accents can be done with Ctrl, Alt + letter. à¡éà³àº

Well, congratulations and welcome to the club. As of next month, I'll have a second niece. ;)

It's easy to learn. Just spend 5 years doing assignments in foreign languages and it'll come as naturally as breathing... ;)

Yeah I'm looking froward to seeing my nephew in a week or so. My wife's Mexican and we're going to visit her family there. If I'm honest though I'm more eagerly anticipating the time in a few years when I can have meaningful interactions with him... ;)
