Okay, Im computarded. That out of the way, I have a problem thats been going on for a few weeks that until just now Ive been ignoring because its mostly just annoying, and doesnt really affect the performance. Every time I bring up the right click menu, the option that I select stays on the screen until I either close and reopen my laptop or restart the computer. Even now, Im staring at a blue "Save Picture As..." bar thats just fucking annoying. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I shall name my firstborn after the person who does so first (or best)!

We share the same problem. :(

Could you give us system data, like processor, RAM, stuff like that?

In Vista, my first call would be to try to turn off/disable some of the options under... what's the menu name in Vista? I'm using Windows 7... it might be "Windows Performance Options" or something similar. It should be able to be accessed if you type "performance" or "performance options". Once you're there, you should be able to switch from "let Windows choose" to "best performance" and that might clear it up.

Try changing the display settings. Get rid of the Aero effects and go to basic display.

try this:
1. Right-Click on a blank area of desktop
2. Select Personalize from the context menu
3. Click Window Color and Appearance Option

4. Here you can check if you want to Enable Transparency or not.
5. You can also disable the whole aero glass theme from here. Just click the Open classic appearance properties for more color options link.
6. Select a non-Aero theme and click OK.

it also seems to be a driver related problem. (graphic card/mouse/whatever) so you might try an update

Wow, three answers, and they all boil down to the same thing: don't ask Windows to work so hard on your display features.

Bottom line, your computer sounds like it's slow or old. Needs more RAM boyo.

You can attempt to reduce the display settings and it might fix it, alternatively it's a good excuse to update your computer or get a new one. :D

But obviously, I've not seen the computer itself - so it's hard to make a proper evaluation.

Is it ever NOT the right time to buy a new computer?

I just got done building a new desktop a few weeks ago, just in time for me to start laptop shopping. And then the next step is shopping for three matching monitors for a super-wide display experience. :p

Lallapalalable, start shopping for RAM. We'll keep shopping for new computer toys.

My personal advice is, get Windows 7, Windows Vista was discontinued because it sucked so much (even worst than XP). Beyound that I can't help you past the "just google it, prety sure someone else had already got the same problem and has already fixed it and posted it online".

I use Vista and have never had a problem, it's much better than XP but I guess you could consider IE better than Firefox if you didn't know how to maintain either.

How slow is your computer?
Have you tried simply clicking the menu and click off again?
Have you up to date graphic card drivers?
Is the menu opaque or not?
Clean the registry? (it might help lol)

I wouldn't take away all the graphics, solve the problem instead and keep the neat effects.
Unless it's just only one single thing like turning off the fade effect (try that too).

Step 1. Go here

Step 2. Download one with a nice name

Step 3. Make backups

Step 4. Use live CD to write over Vista

Step 5. Learn to skip without scuffing heels

Step 6. Eat dinner

Okay, did that. Its working pretty good now, although the asthetics are a bit low (windows 95ey, but its nostalgic :D ). So far so good, but I do believe its time for either a new OS, or computer entirely, in the near future (this one's about a year and a half old).

Thanks to everyone else, but it looks like my first child will be named joe (which works with both genders, so, awesome?)

I figured that out (clicking a new menu and off again) shortly after posting this, but that was, like, two more clicks than I had patience for. I also just did a system restore a few weeks ago, because I was getting blue screened every few months, so I dont believe the registry is all that bad atm. And as far as the graphics go, Its the card that came with the computer, but Im not all that concerned with the appearance and I kinda like the "new" look I got from joe's advice. I think it was the fade effect anyway, becuase the menus would stop in the middle of appearing until I moved over them.

Long and skinny of it is, I do need some sort of update, whether hardware or software, but my crippling case of poordom is keeping me where Im at for the time being. But I still have my desktop, which is fine right now, so Its not a pressing issue.

if you're computarted, maybe you haven't defragged or done disk cleanup in a while...most tech as new as yours will do it automatically out of the box, but you might want to check the settings for WHEN and HOW OFTEN it's doing that.

Well... if you tell us what your system specs are, there might be a way for you to get a decent upgrade for really cheap.

You probably need to update your video driver, but without further information I coudl'nt even point you in any other way but "the computer's manufacturer"

This is what I was going to suggest.

It sounds like your video card is dropping the ball somewhere. Usually updating to the most recent drivers will fix these sorts of problems.

It could also be those silly glass effects that Windows uses causing the issue with the video card, but in the end I'd still tie it back to your video.

If you go to ]Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager] you'll be able to look at all the devices on your system, including your "display adapter" or "video adapter." That will tell you what kind you have, probably nVidia(it may say GeForce) or ATI. Go to their site, nVidia has an auto detect tool that will determine what card you have and get you the proper drivers. ATI should have something similar.

RAM is 4 gigs, processor is an intel core 2 duo T6400 2 GHz, and its a 64 bit system. Dont know what all you need to know, but I can pull up more if need be.

And my hard drive has about 202 gigs free, dont know if a defrag is worth anything when its that high but I can give it a go.
