something to the effect of:

"2012: The Mayans predicted it and today, scientists tell us that a catastrophic solar event will occur in that year. We at the Institute for Human Continuity have been watching and preparing for 2012 and have even set up a lottery; find out more at theIHC.com"

yeah, I know, but it's on discovery (which for the most part doesn't air movie trailers)... I haven't seen it on other channels, though I guess I just haven't been watching enough tv?

I've lost all my respect for Discovery and History channel the last years. First and foremost History channel constantly air shows like "Secrets of the Bible" and "Decoding the Bible" or whatever those shows are called where they talk about the events in the bible as if they actually happend. They also show bullshit shows like "Iceroad Truckers" WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT?! Discovery is not better in any way. They constantly air shows like "Dirty Jobs" or "OCC Choppers", "American Hotrods" it makes me want to puke all over them. The rest of the time they fill up with dreadfull popscience shows.

DirtyJobs is awesome, and of course they're gonna be popscience, it's a public channel, they need good ratings.

The History Channel does have a lot of religious and conspiracy programs that go on. They probably have 18 different versions of "UFO Hunters" or something like that. It helps with ratings, I suppose.

Discovery at least doesn't do much pseudo-science or conspiracies, I will agree with you that programs like Dirty Jobs turn me away from that. I mean really, the channel is supposed to be about the natural universe, namely the natural world, correct? The National Geographic Channel gets that MUCH better, but they are more... private? I suck with TV lingo.

I must say I love MythBusters though.

The end f the world again? OMG I lost count how many times do this bloody world ended already?
-Year 100
-Year 1000
-Year 1999 (predicted by this genius Paco Rabanne)
-Year 2000

and now 2012, well at least they pushed, again, the date...

Does anybody else remember back in 1996 when residents of Los Angeles got all paranoid and pissed-off when there were airplane banner ads with "End of the World - ID4" or something like that for the movie "Independence Day"?

Maybe it was just a local story.

You forgot 2001. After the 2000 crossover, all the millennium doomsdayers said, "the real millennium begins at 1, not 0."

To be honest, I'm actually looking forward to the 2012 movie. I know it will be just full of stupid crap like Day After Tomorrow, but I'm a visual effects nerd. In the trailers, all the destruction just looks so detailed and pristine. Its the type of thing that simply has to be seen in a theater.

Of course it is. Its "from the creator of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow." And I don't really care what crushes what. The effects are more detailed than anything I've seen in a movie to date. Eye porn is a good enough reason to go to the movies and I consider this educational eye porn.

Discovery is going the route of TLC, they're replacing all their educational programming with reality shows. TLC used to be "the learning channel", now it's stuffed to the brim with crap, and soon Discovery will be the same way, and the history channel will likely be offered up to the pseudoscience/conspiracy theory gods.

I mainly stick with natgeo and the science channel now, hopefully they won't sell out to the asininity of the American public.
