*Groan* Father is a biggot

I love my father dearly. I live with him (unashamed at 27) and I'm pretty happy living with him. I look after him, pay his bills and take care of the house. Now, a little background. My father is a retired military man (air force) who grew up is Mississippi in the 50s and went to Vietnam in the 60s. Growing up I almost never heard negative words (racial slurs, misogynistic terms etc) actually the only time I heard them was from my mom!

Now that I'm an adult though clearly the gloves have come off. I am a very open minded woman who doesn't think different of people because of where they are from, their monitary worth, skin color... religion is a different matter. You can't pick where you're born but you do (dependingly) pick your religion and frankly 99% of them are a crock of shit. However I don't treat people poorly because of this.

On the other hand my father doesn't like blacks, mexicans, arabs (he's ok with asians oddly enough O_O) and he really doesn't like gays. He calls them faggots to no ones surprise.

We've gotten into many heated debates about it and the strangest thing is... he has yet to give a single reason why he dislikes gays!! None! Not a one! The closest I got was 'it just seems wrong' which is a pretty sad answer...

I think its interesting that he raised three kids who are all very modern and forward thinking. None of us are racist and in fact one of my brothers is very pro-gay, pro-womens rights etc. So two liberal kids and one libertarian... sheesh...

I just wish there was less hate in the world T_T

My father is an uber-fundamentalist Southern Baptist who thinks I say what I say because Satan has deceived me into being angry at God.

As do I, but people will be people.

Sounds kind of like one of my uncles, though. He's epic homophobic, to the point of beating them down. The only reason I see is that he's scared that he's gay.

He's right! Beelzebub has tricked you into thinking that God is an enormous douche! Oh... Wait...

My cousin is like that. He can be a little scary if you debate him and his gf has just made him worse, so annoying  I feel it's merely because of his gf he is so bad though. He was most likely agnostic before she showed up and threw him on the Christian bandwagon. Dunno how to break him of that short of breaking them up which I'm not going to do since they seem happy lol.

Don't we all...

My mother (a devout Irish RC) is just like your dad. She hates "the gays" and "the blacks". When I was younger (18) one of my friends was gay and would come over to visit. She always used to break the cup he used for coffee after he left...she didn't come to my secular wedding not because it was secular but because my (atheist) husband was born in to the CofE. When my daughter was born my hsband and I never had her baptised. My parents had her for a week when she was 3 and my mother had her baptised. I have long given up trying to get my point of view across. My mother lives in a tormented world which she has created in her head. Now that I am pushing 40 i realise the absolute futility of the arguments we used to have. These days I just bite my tounge.

My grandfather is just like this. He hates everyone: from arabs to hispanics (although he is one) to blacks to asians. I haven't questioned him about gays, but I guess he is a little more tolerant since we have had homosexuals in our family; though he is still a little homophobic.

What really gets him is black people. Everytime we go out with him we risk being in a public relations fiasco. He is like a ticking time-bomb before he says the n-word. The funny thing is my dad is as tanned as Barack Obama, and he always says in denial that he is "white". He is like the guy in the party that said the most disturbing thing and makes everybody feel awkward and even insulted afterward.

Its a nightmare.

Our family goes to churches for weddings, and occasionally funerals - though the last one I went to was completely secular. I have a great uncle who said 'God bless you all' once, that's as religious as we get. Doesn't really compare to the rest of your experiences, I can't even imagine what it must be like.

The interesting thing is my dad isn't religious! He considers himself a heathen and all we often have interesting conversations about the bible and religion. He teaches me a lot about it and I bring up interesting little passages that he might have missed.

I think its just his background. A deeply religious mother, having grown up in the deep south, running away from it to the military.

My hardships come from my head :p his were a little more real world so I don't really blame him... I just wish he had less hate in him.

That sounds familiar. I got caught tagging one day and my dad told me satan was deceiving me with spraypaint and mischievous attitude.

my grandparents on my mums side are a little bit religous but apart from that they arent really bad and they dont mind that im atheist. the rest of my family just go to church for weddings and funerals etc.

my dad is the best, whenever there is someone on tv promoting god/allah etc hes like "i hate those bible bashers etc" its so funny to watch. glad hes on my side ^_^

i do feel sorry for those of you with seriously religous relatives

My dad was quite the gay basher, he is starting to be more reasonable though. I have talked with him about it before, and like you said, there is no rational reason for him to hate the gays. I have pointed this out to him. His responses are always very weak, like "Well, I dunno..."

He is changing though. Instead of actively hating gays, now he just thinks they are funny, he laughs at them and makes jokes about them. But that is much better, because hating a group is much worse than making fun of them.

What made him stop hating the gays was when I used the argument "Gay people don't chose to be gay, it is not within their control, therefore it is irrational to hate them for it, considering they did not chose it, it's not their fault". So now he just laughs about them but he does not hate them. A step in the right direction :D

He can get his amusement and laughs if he wants, to me that's not a problem. As long as there is no hate.

There is a moderate level of religiousness among my relatives, most of them I can tolerate. The worst offender though is my grandmother, who is a bible-thumping psychopath. I am fed up with her bullshit. Everything to her is a sin, everything good that happens is thanks to god...etc. She's an imbecile.

I listen to death metal and black metal, and when she found out about that, she got really angry. It's "blasphemous" music. (That's kind of the point, idiot...)

And I am a guy with long hair, which she finds improper. She thinks I might be slipping into a dangerous subculture with blasphemous and satanic philosophies. I reminded her that Jesus had long hair. Then she shut the fuck up...for a little while.

Yeah I get that. My parents aren't to bad. They are immigrants from Poland and that was an all white and a very Catholic place, even with the Soviets controling it at the time. Growing up I heard them say a ton of bigotted things, but as time went on, they become more tolerant. The last thing I heard from them that would be considered bigotted is hearing them say that gay people don't have a place in the world and they wanted me to stay away from school because they heard a rumor that a gay man was going to be honored in a assembly of some sort. That was last year, now they are more tolerant I don't know their stance on Atheism, I don't intend to find out until I enter college, and maybe after I graduate from college.
