Green Energy Slug

Greetings,

Green sea slug makes chlorophyll like a plant
A number of animals (such as corals) host microbes and algae and benefit from their photosynthesis, but in most of these associations the cells remain whole. In Elysia chlorotica, in contrast, the cells are broken down and chloroplasts are extracted and held inside the slug's own cells, where they remain active for the slug's lifetime of almost a year. Researchers have shown that once a young slug has eaten a meal of Vaucheria algae it never has to eat again as long as it has access to light and supplies of chlorophyll and other chemicals used in photosynthesis.
Kindest regards,

James

out of curiousity, why do you put "greetings" and "kindest regards" on every post? doesn't get tedious?

Greetings,

Well - I trust nobody finds it tedious to read them... ;)

I used to be staffer at the late CastleCops site: I got into the habit of doing it as a form of politeness to everyone - besides, I use FASS, which allows me to standardize appellations and signatures.

I only ever had one person complain: a woman from a US military family who said that "Greetings" was what the government (DoD) started any letter which had bad news (death of soldier, etc).

Both sides of my family are military (British/Royal Irish regiments) going back several generations, so it really didn't (doesn't) bother me.

Kindest regards,

James

Yeah I read about this slug before and it's damn awesome. Sometimes I wish I was a biologist. I'd swap some of my genes with that slug and just bask in the sun. But I'd probably have to eat algae.
