God himself is a metaphor

I was always curious about the nature of cherry picking the bible. I personally find it annoying how the religious could easily dismiss whole sections of the bible, saying it was all a metaphor and you cannot read it literally. The religious find this a very convenient device that allows them to bend the rules as much as they like.

However, shouldn't all rules have a double edge sword? If you are going to arrange the rules, you have to apply them consistently. So taking the argument of the bible being filled with metaphors, can't you say that God himself is a metaphor? Outside from the Jefferson bible, why in many interpretations God is the only figure that could be consistently concluded to be the truth?

Agreed. Every time the subject of the Bible comes up in one of my classes, I hear the teacher saying "OF COURSE, it's not supposed to be taken literally!". I sometimes facepalm.

Christians cherry pick from the Bible more than they do from scientists...

Typical discussion:

Fundie: "EVILUTIONISM is fake and a lie. We have no observable evidence for it."
Me: "We DO have observable and testable evidence - but even if we didn't, how would that make it any different than the claims of someone turning the Nile into Blood?"
Fundie: "That's just a metaphor."
Me: "Alright, what about observable evidence of a man walking on Water?"
Fun.: "That was a miracle of God."

Me: "So, how does one determine something that is a Miracle and actually happened versus a metaphor that didn't happen?"

(Ever hear this one before, ladies and gentlemen?)

Fun.: "IT requires proper study of the Bible and the guided wisdom of the Holy Spirit to do that."

tl;dr Fundamentalist Christians use a filter that they preconceive as unbiased, but when it comes to practical application it can be demonstrably shown that it isn't - seeing as there are people whom will agree with them on everything except a single part of the Bible.
