Fix AGW or Manipulate the Weather

Interesting read on an article about research aimed at manipulating the weather in order to help "control" Anthropogenic Global Warming.

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/how-to-regulate-climate-control-2019095.html

I found this following quote to be quite disheartening. :(
Last year the Royal Society published a report on the issue, "Geoengineering the climate". It responds to the continued failure of politicians to tackle the escalating volume of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. "Efforts to reduce emissions have not yet been sufficiently successful to provide confidence that the reductions needed to avoid dangerous climate change will be achieved," it says. "This has led to growing interest in geoengineering, defined as the deliberate large-scale manipulation of the planetary environment to counteract anthropogenic climate change."

Hacking the planet seems such a drastic option. I only hope we know what we are doing.

I know what you mean.... But if we know how bad/fast one way leads, and the governments/leaders (i.e. wealthy/powerful) won't do anything about it, what option do we have >.<

It seems ridiculous that we are constantly adding new problems to cover the old problems instead of just fixing/dealing with the original problem... Over fishing means we hunt bigger/rarer fish and use more destructive fishing methods (deep sea trawling, drag nets, explosives etc.) which kills unintended species. Deforestation to build more urban/farm areas which contribute to pollution/global warming like a double edged blade.

I wish the IPCC had a bit more power and clout. Oil companies are paying millions to generate and spread misinformation while the IPCC does lab tests to generates reports.

Geoengineering could be a great long term survival skill for the human race. We might have to come up with a lot of new species names if our technological advancement continues at historic growth rates ;)

@SagansHeroes: Yup. I say we launch simultaneous coups d'états, replace the govs with people who actually know shit about the fields where they are supposed to make informed decisions and start from there. I mean geoengineering? We can't even reliably predict the fucking weather.

Climate != Weather
That's probably my fault, I put weather in the title.
I think atm they are talking about how they can only manipulate local weather, but global climate is on the horizon. This is REALLY bad if we have to resort to it though. I mean it will more or less give the oil companies free rain till earth is tapped out, then we will probably be suck Titan dry of all it's gasses >.<... Not to mention the other possible issues that could come from an ever increasingly polluted atmosphere that we don't know about yet.

Hopefully civilization figures out how ecosystems and limited resources while developing geotechnology. Tinkering with the climate seems like a rather lofty dream when the planet is being tapped out by capitalism.

No shit, sherlock.
Relax man... You're short fuse is getting really annoying.

Beyond my grievance with your tonality, what was the point of your first post? Reliably predicting the weather has nothing to do with reliably predicting the climate. World climate models are rapidly improving and don't require as much fuss as predicting the weather. You comment seems completely irrelevant which is why I'm surprised you're acting like a complete ass over it.

The easier it is for people to avoid making a certain mistake, the shorter my fuse if they fail to do so. It's a simple f(x)=1/e. Just don't claim I said stuff I didn't say or misinterpret stuff I did say and we're good. Unless you mix up -ie- and -ei-, but that's a different issue.
I'm saying that the fact that we, despite the huge amount of reliable and accurate data from several sources, cannot accurately predict the weather should result in some humility regarding "large-scale manipulation of the planetary environment".
