Every politician I disagree with IS Adolf Hitler, literally.

I just have to vent this here, and see if anyone else comes across this type of thing.

The other day I was walking with my family in our neighborhood, which is most inhabited by socially relaxed, liberal leaning folk. But every now and then we have to hurry past Mormons trying to tell us the GOOD NEWS, which I wont get into here, and people brandishing signs with pictures of Obama with a Hitler mustache. I can't even be bothered to remember exactly what their position is, because I refuse to let pass the positively ham-fisted attempt at making a political statement.

A part of me wanted to just fuck with them: Walk up to them and go, "So wait, is what you're trying to say that, Barack Obama, is literally Adolf Hitler? Like, in a disguise?" And they'd say something dumb and politically over-simplistic, and I'd say, "Ok. So. You, are saying YOU, have found legitimate reason to believe, as here clearly advertised, that Adolf Hitler, actually survived World War II, had is body physically augmented by south american plastic surgeons to look like a black man, then gradually worked his way into politics to become president of the country that defeated him, and transform it into a Nazi Germany that is disguised to completely resemble a free democracy?"

That might have been more fun than simply pointing out that comparing Obama to Hitler is absurd and trivializes the actions of Hitler, while essentially saying that anyone you disagree with is genocidally evil.

Such idiots always try to liken their political demon du jour to a infamous leader like Hitler. Ironically, their Republican hero is most likely to bring fascism to America.

And yet, even the Republicans have not yet reached as far as Hitler, by a pretty fair margin.

But Hitler wasn't the only fascist.

Alot of the problem stems from the fact that, certainly outside of Germany and Italy at the very least, Adolf Hitler and Mussolini during the 20s and 30's were very slippery bastards to pin-down politically. Partly as a result of all their propaganda which was trying to appeal to all segments of society (As Fascists do even today) but also from those who actually bought into parts of their propaganda but from an opposite perspective in order to utilise it to create their own "Anti-fascist" propaganda. So for communists Hitler and by extension Mussolini and fascism in general became in the words of Georgi Dimitrov at the 7th Congress of the Commitern in 1935 "the open terroristic dictatorship of the most reactionary, most chauvinist, and most imperialist elements of finance capital" (Quoted from Ian Kershaw, "The Nazi dictatorship: Problems and Perspectives of Interpretation (4th ed)", p12.) wheras for Anti-fascist conservatives Hitler and mussolini was just what his propaganda claimed him to be, ie "Socialist". It didn't help that Conservatives and Socialists alike were seduced by (especially Hitler's) slippery propaganda from time to time which is why we have so many Pro-Hitler statements from both (About this i recommend Another Ian Kershaw book, "Making friends with Hitler: Lord Londonderry, the Nazis and the road to war") and to add even more confusion Political debates in Britain and the USA during the Interwar period often transcended mainstream party-political lines. When you add all this up it's quite clear you have a quite potent recipe for words like "Fascist", "Nazi", "Hitler" being flung about in the sadly-free manner that they are today. When it was discovered by the allies when they were going through Europe in 1944-45 that the Nazis were responsible for what is now arguably the most infamous genocide in all of history, those flinging about of terms took on a real poignancy.

Because of all of this above "Fascist/Nazi/Hitler" etc became synonyms for the entwining of the concepts of "evil" and "other". So when a person uses these as insults what they're really doing is saying "oh they're doing something i don't personally like, something that i personally believe [rightly or wrongly remember] that Hitler/Mussolini/etc did so therfore they must be "fascists/ nazis/hitler etc". This high use and abuse is a real pain for historians and scholars seeking an objective understanding of what Fascism is as the term is so highly devalued now and exists as little more than a "boo word". There is actually a debate as to whether historians should dispense of the word altogether because of this.

I always consider it a sign that someone has no idea how life under a real dictator would be if they make such comparisons. Yeah, keep saying so-and-so is Hitler while you make your way to vote in the free election that's strangely still happening in spite of Hitler apparently being in charge.

i often think it's more a case of lack of understanding than lack of experience. Either way the comparisons are still unjustified.

That's what I mean, I think it shows that they're ignorant of the history of dictatorships that they'd make such comparisons, and that they're ignorant in general for making such trivial comparisons when real discussion and debate could suffice.

And to clarify, as much as I hated G W Bush, I still thought comparing him to Hitler was stupid.(Hitler was smarter) I agree that the problem is people who lack perspective. People don't know how good they have it compared to just a few generations ago when civil rights for black people was still an issue.

To be honest Hitler at least manage to make it look like he'd fixed the german economy in the 30s. Obama hasn't even managed that.

Still, i'm waiting for the US regime change operation in Poland. They're clearly funding terrorism or something :)
