Spork mentioned it in the "Recommend me some games..." thread. Seemed to suggest it wasn't that immersive, though.
I played X3 for a while some time ago. Boy, that's hard to get into. It was a space trading/combat game with a MAJOR focus on trading. So much so in fact that it made it dull. You had to play it for a good 4-5 hours before you got anywhere, and the learning curve was just too steep for me to be arsed to climb.

EV Nova is good and quite fun, I would just like something along the lines of Freelancer, nice graphics, sound and story 
Was considering X3 but as you and a lot of others have said, there's a lot to take in and a lot of time needing to be sunk into it. I did play and get into Eve Online for a while, but I can't justify the monthly cost for a game that for a lot of the time has a bunch of bastards in it
