1) Evolution works through natural selection - it's the environment that drives evolution. As I explained in the other thread, the environment shapes species in the same way that a vessel shapes the water into which it is poured.

In fact, the full title of Darwin's book is, "On The Origin Of Species, By Natural Selection".

2) It takes very long periods of time for new species to evolve.

Yes, cats don't give birth to dogs - but over a very long period of time (millions of years), small changes will eventually result in a species resembling dogs.

Land animals evolved from fish.

Early on, some members of coast-dwelling fish were able to drag themselves onto beaches for short periods of time to eat something, perhaps insects.

These had an advantage over the other fish.

They passed on the genes allowing their offspring to also drag themselves onto beaches.

Over a very long period of time. through many generations. this resulted in more than one population.

1) The original population of water-only fish (aquatic);
2) A second population that were equally at home in water, and on land (amphibious);
3) A third population that were more at home on land rather than in water (terrestrial).

You start out with one population (species), and end up with three populations (species).

The evolution of whales went the other way - we started out with mammals (particularly a coast-dwelling species), from which an amphibious species evolved, from which an aquatic species evolved
