Regarding this topic: http://forums.leagueofreason.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3474

I thought it might be a good idea to have a subforum to discuss existing documentaries.

I agree, although...

From what I have learned about discussion forums (former member of theadminzone.com) its not good to segment a forum too much unless its waranted by a high volume of discussions. Looking at the layout of this forum, I would say its pretty good but a little on the divided side.

With that being said, the nature of LoR really suits the discussion of documentaries so I would make this split -but only after streamlining some of the divisions (like the atheism/theism subforum and some of the ones in general discussion)

Not sure a specific thread promoting documentaries that people post on youtube is a good idea. It would be okay if they were legitimately posted by the documentary makers but propping up copyright infringement is probably a bad idea.

I hear your concern but I dont think it should prevent this from going through. Keep in mind that many documentaries are made with the intent of spreading awareness rather than a simple profit motive. In those cases, the film makers would actually be happy to have their movie on yt. Those concerned about profits are fully capable of filing a legitimate DMCA to have their films removed.

Do you think its a good idea though? A good fit for the forums?

Whether or not they are for profit or trying to spread a message doesn't matter, and if they are trying to spread their message they are perfectly capable of putting their own movie onto youtube. Obviously the responsibility lies more with youtube and the uploader as to the content that they put out, but I don't think it's a great idea to promote the sharing of this material through the site. If people want to post the occasional youtube vid then that's fine, I just think a specific area for them takes it too far.

Would posting guidelines help (ie trailors or links from media distributors only)? Leave it up to the members to find it from there...

TBH, I'm with Spork on this one. I would say it merits a stickied thread at the ABSOLUTE most. I can't see it being that active a subforum.

Well, one reply into that thread and I could already tell it was going to be a lot of work to keep the top post updated. If there was a dedicated section, each documentary could have its own thread giving people a chance to comment on the content.

Considering this is a place of learning, surely documentaries take precedence over video games...

No it isn't, it's an internet discussion forum,...no more, no less.

Try telling people that you're studying at "The League of Reason",....I'm sure they'll enjoy a good laugh.

One can learn a lot from video games.

A place that respects knowledge... Does that work for you?

Yea.

I wasn't being pedantic,..."place of learning" is an accepted phrase denoting a recognised seat of education, at least it is in the UK.

No worries, I should have chosen my words more carefully. Seems like there are more disagreements on these boards over semantics than anything else.

its rather hard to dispute logic. but feed different definitions into the machine and you get drastically different results. i think most disputes period are about semantics, though certainly some are about matters of fact.
