Disturbing UK School Textbook

arg-fallbackName="ScienceGaveMeAHadron"/>
In the United Kingdom 'Religious Education' is a compulsory GCSE qualification, a relic from Tony Blair's extreme religiosity. After my GCSE's I kept my textbook and I would just like to recite some of the more disturbing articles of text.

1) On the subject of the Big Bang Theory
- "The theory suggests everything began with a big bang"
Well, no, it doesn't suggest there was a beginning at all, this is of course wishful thinking by those people who want to invoke 'Creation requires Creator"

-"It happened more than 15 billion years ago"
No, more like 13.7 billion

2) On the subject of Evolution

-"It is only a theory"
Sigh =/

-"It describes process of development and adaption within species - the question is still not completely clear about transformation from one species to another"
This argument hangs around like a bad smell, this is totally the wrong way round; Darwin had no doubts at all about the change of species/macroevolution he had doubts about small scale changes since there was no knowledge of bacteria, genes or DNA. According to this textbook the fossil record is non-existent.

-"It does not explain the origins of the first lifeforms"
Ah for crying out loud, another abiogenesis/evolution mix up, I must congratulate the writers of this R.E. book for truly capturing the essence of religions lying and idiocy.

-"It does not explain the order in the universe, or the reason for 'natural laws' that exist within the unverse"
Sorry but what the hell, firstly the idea of 'order' within the universe is stupid since the universe is most certainly headed towards disorder unless your extremely strange god wants the entire universe spread out over 80 billion or so light years since it appeases him, this seems to be a mix up of subjects, biology with cosmology.

3) On the subject of 'Science and Religion'

-"Really, science and religion are both asking questions about the world and life; they are however asking different kinds of questions"
No, No, No. Baseless claims and statements ARE NOT QUESTIONS, in what way is 'God dun it' a question, please answer that author of this textbook. Religion doesn't 'ask' questions since they already believe they have the answers which is why they say this so often. Science does not ask questions either, it makes observations and then makes conclusions that best fit the EVIDENCE."

It then goes on to say things like "Science asks how questions like "how did this begin?" religion asks why questions like 'why did this begin" I can't believe the author didn't see how self refuting this is. If religion asks 'why did this began' science tells them and they don't listen, the fact is if you say 'Why did this begin - because it has a purpose' and then someone else researches 'how' it began and sees that it actually didn't begin for any reason at all then the first question is refuted isn't it.

Well this textbook has lowered by IQ 10 points, I'm extremely tempted to ring the company up and have a rant at them. If anyone wants me to go ahead with the rant and record it/make a textual summary of it just say so.

I'm glad I went to a catholic school. They may be batshit insane in other areas, but with science they don't tend to kick off like other denominations do. I had none of this 'only a theory' bullshit at school.

The book was written by a muslim and a christian so it's very, very critical of science and doesn't make any criticisms of religion at all.

Thats very weird. When I was doing RE at school, it was only about different religions. As evolution has nothing to do with religion it was never even mentioned. Were you at a private religious school? What was the name of the text book?

No I was at a normal state school, name is 'Believing and Living' by hodddereducation

give em a ring and refute their arguments, their website is http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk

I'd want to see the text before I started calling them up, but I can't find it for less than ,£12.99, and I'm not giving them that much money.
