Despicable Bible Passages

Do we have a collected resource of the really nasty quotes in the bible? Thought it would be a handy thing to refer to.

Some of my favorites:

2 Sam 12: 11-18 - David angers god, so god kills David's child and has David's wives publicly raped to punish him. Now that's justice.

2 Kings 2:24 - God slaughtering children with bears, an instant classic.

Deut 13: 6-11 - Apostasy is death.

It'd be nice to have some New Testament and Koran quotes as well.

Well, God did send his only son to die a horrific torturous death. That's some pretty cold hearted shit if you ask me. I mean: he's all powerful. If he wanted to save us, he could have just spoken from the sky, or, you know, snapped his fingers or whatever he does. Instead he sent his son to be tortured and killed.

Surah 2:216 "Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you; but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knoweth, ye know not." - Don't think for yourself, Allah knows best. War is good for you.

1 Peter 2:18 "Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse." - Slaves obey your masters, self-explanatory really.

What are you talking about?

I agree that God sent his only son to die, but his only son was just another incarnation of himself so, in that sense, it was the ultimate, most unselfish sacrifice ever... oh God is soooooooooooooooooooooo awesome. Cos he told me so himself. Indirectly. In a Dream. During a vision. While I was talking in tongues.

Urgh, it almost hurt the type that...

This would make a great topic for a wiki site. People could list the various interpretations and rationalizations of the passages then follow up with real world implecations.

There we go! Then we could try to make it easily searchable.

I use SAB to look up passages but never really tried finding new stuff in it; I'll have to check out some of their collections.

Revilation 2:20 - Jesus holds the toloration of heresy against you. He then proceeds to kill the heretics (presumably) innocent children.

I usually bring this up when Christians talk about how Christianity is actually quite tolerant, and how it has just been distorted by the papacy and such.

As an interesting side-note, I know for a fact this specific passage was invoked against the Albigensians. Though you'd all probably be more familiar with the other famous Catholic quote of that campaign from Béziers: in responce to, "how shall we tell the infidel from the true believer," the answer came, "Kill them all. God shall know his own."

I should add, in fairness, that Bishop Arnaud is merely alleged to have said this.

EDIT: I should also, in fairness, add that Jesus is likewise only alleged to have said the above, and indeed probably did not on account of having been dead for quite some time.
