Conservatives + Sarah Palin

I was just wondering what you all thought about the Conservative obsession with Sarah Palin. Every time I see her on the news, it seems as though the Conservatives prop her up and up as someone to be admired, someone intelligent, and someone who demonstrates good leadership skills. Yet, at seemingly every turn, she seems to display the exact opposite qualities. She's given up her own governorship, she didn't even know what the BUSH DOCTRINE WAS, and her foreign policy experience can essentially be summed up with the phrase "I can see a foreign nation from my home state, therefore I have experience in foreign affairs."

So, disregarding my ramblings, why do you think Sarah Palin receives so much attention from Conservatives?

I did a search on topics regarding "Sarah Palin", so if this topic has already been done and I failed to find it, my sincere apologies.

I think Sarah Palin is killing the republican party. That having been said, she really appeals to the creationists and the "get god back in schools" types, and as sad as it is, we still have a lot of those.

I hear ya, I suppose they've certainly needed one after The Banana Man (Ray Comfort, i case you were unaware) absolutely made them all look extremely stupid, let's hope Sarah Palin stays away from Fruits and Veggies

My theory?
She's cover for the party. She says all of the stupid, bigoted, anti-American stuff that Republicans are thinking in order to keep the base fired up, and then when the next presidential election comes up, she'll be shoved aside for someone who doesn't have a four year record of saying stupid, bigoted, anti-American stuff in order to attract the independents.

I hope you're wrong. I'm also not quite so cynical as you, for, while i imagine that will probably happen (unless the republican party really does want to kill itself), I think it less some devious cynical plan than a coincidental "the republican party has nothing to talk about now, so might as well put her on the spotlight".

I'd say it's one of two things. First, it's possible that the conservatives are latching onto the first person with charisma they could find because they know their crotchety old man image was getting old. Second, the core of the conservatives are the religious fundies and they legitimately believe what she does.

Now, I hope it's the first one. That's just good political sense: people like charismatic leader figures. And she's also a woman, so that's brownie points for them with all the feminists (IF you disregard the fact that she's against almost everything they support, of course). But I'm almost positive it's the second one. In America, the religious fundies are quite obviously the largest sect of the politically active Republicans. They're the reason all the Republican candidates lately have been fundies, or at least had to say they were to get past the primaries. So yeah, it's sadly probably legitimate support.

I laughed when I read that "crotchety old man image was getting old", so kudos for that.

As for your reasoning as to why they like her, I agree. Sarah Palin may be demonstrably stupid, but that doesn't mean people won't like her just because she has more charisma than any other Conservative (which is like eating more cheeseburgers than a lactose intolerant Hindu, there's just no contest.)

DISCLAIMER: Saying that I believe that someone has charisma does not mean I like or agree with them AT ALL.

Seconded! I'm a total liberal, but even I can see she has personality and charisma. I still think she's a total moron, but she has the one thing going for her.

arg-fallbackName="M.W.T.B.F."/>
I put that disclaimer in there for exactly that reason, I didn't want anyone mistaking the facts of the matter for what I believe.

For Example: John McCain is a war veteran and deserves some respect for that, but that doesn't mean that I think his political policies are good just because of that.

I don't agree at all. His service was an embarrassment from start to finish, and crashing a bunch of planes and getting caught by the enemy doesn't make you a hero. Signing up for military service because your daddy makes you, because you're unfit for any other job, and because your daddy can pull strings and get you the job you want even though you are also unfit for THAT job? That just makes you a spoiled, privileged brat.

He and Palin were made for each other. Of course, now he thinks she's "irrelevant."

arg-fallbackName="M.W.T.B.F."/>
Oh dear, it seems that McCain has finally realized what a monster he's created, and is trying to get her out of the spotlight! Good article.

You'll notice that he's trying to have it both ways... Palin is irrelevant, but he's proud of her. The "Straight Talk Express" has a couple of flat tires, a cracked axle, and a blown head gasket.

Indeed, I did notice it. In fact, what I find disturbing is that nothing in the article seemed to point that out, I guess he's just covering his tracks for when the stupids elect her as president and she has to decide whether to let him live or not.

Palin is red meat for the base. She's still performing her role as a bulldog which is exactly the wrong position to be in if you want to run for president. Not to mention, unceremoniously dropping out of being governor because the job is getting too hard. I have no illusions that Palin herself is naive and narcissistic enough to think she can pull off a run for President, but I think the Republicans are a bit smarter than that. She'll probably end up with an anchor spot on Fox News, where the Republicans stick all their wannabes and has-beens.

arg-fallbackName="Whitelightning1161"/>
^I agree mapp,
Personally
I think she still has a shot when it comes to the republican nominee, which is sad, but, who else do the republicans really have?

They had bobby jindal, but after he bombed that speech, no one takes him seriously
They had mark Sanford, until he made the wrong turn on the Appalachian Trail, and ended up in a Argentinean woman's pants
They had john ensign, and well we all know about his issues

who's really left, Sarah palin, mitt Romney, and Tim polenti, (not sure if I spelled there names right)

Sarah palin is the most recognizable figure there,

she would lose the election of course

and then she would become a fox news anchor

Don't get me wrong, palin is a total moron, but because of all the problems of the other potential candidates, and her udder stupidity, she has a shot, It's not from a helicopter, but it's a shot non the less.

Yeah, and the bright idea that Romney had over the weekend was...

... you're going to be shocked if you follow politics at all...

MORE TAX CUTS!!

Since the Republican Party is completely and 100% intellectually bankrupt at this point, they might as well run with Palin, Queen of the Dumb.

I thought this would be entertaining as well:

Kind of a greatest hits of Palin stupidity.

The Republican party didn't need Sarah Palin's help to destroy itself.

I don't think that Palin has any ambition to become president. The fact that she resigned the governorship is enough to prove that. She's in it for one thing, the money.

The reason she's acting as a bulldog is to draw attention to her. The more attention she gets, the more books she sells. I'll even bet she runs in the primary so she can write a book about it.

As for Republicans, remember in 2008 when everyone was talking about the showdown between Clinton and Guliani? Don't make any predictions, expecially this early.
