I'm slightly worried about how they plan to implement the bombardment ability they hint at, they had something similar in Alpha Centauri and it was abusible to the point that it partially ruined a great game for me.

Also I noticed they have switched from a squares system to a hex system and they seem to show the unit formations with a facing so does this mean that there may be combat bonus's for flanking units? I've always liked the Civilization games ever since the very first one, so I'll definitely give this one a try

i would think if it hasn't been featured since Alpha Centuri that bombardment will have been improved.

i have hopes for the Hex system that will probably go un-realised.

but overall i have high hopes for the nest instalment of the game that has taken SOO much of my life. the only game topping it is sins of a solar empire.

There was bombardment in Civ3... The problem they've had with it is that the AI always fails to use it effectively, not that the actual mechanic is broken. It looks like they are spending some time and money on the AI for Civ5, and I have high hopes for it.

The one thing I nitpick about is the unrealistic aspects of it. The graphics are cartoony, the units move far too slowly [esp naval units!] for the time frames, and the whole "one unit per tile! no stacks!" thing.

Nevertheless I will probably shell out US$50.00 for it.

I hope they make it as awesome as Alpha Centauri was, it's still my all-time favorite game.

So far I am disappointed with what I have seen from Civ5. Somethings really do look hopeful, but they are stripping away far too much. Religion in Civ4 was interesting. Sure, it was too dramatic and ended up polarizing the game early on (when people switched to free religion later in the game things eased up), but I don't think they should remove it. I mean, a sequel should improve on the last game, not get rid of everything they added and add different stuff.

From what I can tell they removed espionage and religion. Espionage I am actually okay with getting rid of, it was never of much interest to me in the first place. What else are they getting rid of?

The "1 unit per tile" thing is actually interesting to me. It seems like it will make the game play out much more tactically. I am kind of tired of having a wall of units move towards me being helpless. Likewise, I am tired of not being able to take a city because it has 400 freaking units in it, even if I can wipe them out with no problem.

EDIT:

Other stuff I remembered. The graphics are a disappointment as well. They aren't bad but they really don't look up to date. CivRev was cartoony but it was lively and fun to look at. And I especially liked the cities in CivRev, the cities in Civ4 are very bland and you either get "western style city" or "eastern style city". And by industrial era they all looked the same. In CivRev I think there was the European/American style city, the Aztec style (shared with Zulus I think), the Middle eastern/egyptian one, the asian one, etc. One thing I really want for them to adopt from CivRev is just the basic concept of the way the city's graphics worked. If a foreign power controlled one of your cities, there would be foreign looking buildings. And that depended on how long they controlled it. Similarly, buildings from the very beginning were still visible, but there were only one or two. The cities were fun to just look at! Civ4's cities had no personality, and it looks like Civ5's don't either.

The actual environments look pretty nice in Civ5 but are not really any major improvement from Civ4. Same thing with the units. I don't know if it is just in Alpha mode but I am hoping they look better and more lively when released.

Personally I'd rather have espionage than religion, but then I also like Civ3 way better than 4...

I was hoping they might finally implement actual 3d elevations a la SMAC, but it looks more like the civ4 graphics and terrain. :(

Also, CivRev doesn't really deserve to be compared to the other civ games, it was a bastardized version for mass-market appeal.

I, too, am hoping that a lot of polish will go on before release.

I'm not talking about CivRev's actual gameplay, but its graphical concepts (if that is the proper wording) were really interesting. Thats the only thing I actually want to be taken from CivRev, the way a city's graphics changed over time.

I think including espionage would be cool but they really need to rework it. I don't know what about it exactly bugged me, but it just felt clunky to me.
