Britan should rename itself "Orwellian Reality"

arg-fallbackName="ImprobableJoe"/>
Is there a link to something real or legitimate on this issue? It sounds like bogus fear-mongering to me... lying, in other words. The only source for this that I can find is a blogger on Wired.com.

Otherwise, there are lots of links for voluntary installation ofCCTV cameras in the homes of people whose homes have been robbed or vandalized. , to stop second break-ins and repeated vandalism. The links are a few years old, but if the program has worked I can't see a problem with expanding it.

As far as the police knocking on doors making sure your kids are OK? We already have that pretty much everywhere on earth. That's not anything new or sinister.

I can also see this being used as an alternative to putting kids into care or young offenders' institutions after they get their umpteenth ASBO due to the parents not giving a stuff - much as tagging is an alternative to custodial sentencing. As long as it's put as an alternative to a heavier punishment rather than as a routine way of monitoring people, I don't have a problem with it.

Here's a real link to what might be the real story: http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/115736/Sin-bins-for-worst-families

If this is an alternative to arresting children and/or parents, or to avoid taking the children out of the homes, I don't see anything Orwellian about it. These are families that are already being monitored because the children are on drugs or committing crimes. It is basically supervised house arrest, and as long as the families have the option of choosing juvenile detention and jail instead of the cameras, there's no harm done here.

See, I knew reality would conform to my moral standards! :D
I guess you lucked out!

BTW, I saw a big red flag here in the link from the first post. Whenever I see an alarmist headline, followed by alarmist claims with ZERO detail or supporting links, my first thought is that there's something missing in the story that would make it seem like much less of a big deal. It usually turns out that I'm right. I love it when that happens!

Yeah, it may seem all nice and friendly right now but remember: these cameras are controlled by a government. It's not a large leap in logic to assume that even if things start out with good intentions, they'll eventually be abused.

Yeah, because the government is evil!

First they built the roads, then they set... speed limits! Next, the roads will eat your children!

They started with schools, and then they... taught things that fundies disagree with! Next, the schools will eat your children!

Joe, you're so naive. Don't you know that everyone will be having RFID chips surgically implanted so the government know where you are at all times? It's the natural consequence of tagging convicted criminals!

Ever heard of echelon? This and recent law changes in the us show that the step from now to goverment monitoring all comunications is one that could be made in less then 10 years, maybe even within 5 years. Assuming consipracy theories are incorrect and we arent there already.

Our government has a new policy: letting convicted criminals escape. 12 in the past week, on 3 separate occasions. It's easier getting out of prison than getting in :D

How many unguarded entrences had that court, 26, 46? That was just pathetic. 2 guys comming in and taking 3 guys with them and walk out of the court.

44 entrances, for 5 guards. The whole thing is just surreal: criminals are guarded by security personnel, which isn't allowed to carry firearms. And the metal detector at the main entrance isn't plugged in!

They're basically trying to step in for dysfunctional families and dumb ass parents that never should have been parents in the first place. Essentially the cameras are there to make sure the kids do their homework, eat their veggies, and go to bed on time.

This is what you can expect from societies who willingly let their government hold their hand because they don't want to do anything for themselves.

Does noone get it, or is everyone being sarcastic?

There are already thousands of cameras watching Britons in public already, and now they are going to invade the privacy of citizens by placing cameras in their homes. They're even going to send people to those homes and have routine checkups and evaluations.

So what? We get it just fine, we just don't see a problem with it.

YOU don't seem to get it. Do you live in some fantasy land where the police can't knock on people's doors?

Maybe you should discuss what this is ACTUALLY supposed to do, instead of whatever strawman you've decided to imagine.

I get it, and it bothers me, but I do not live in the UK. I also didn't feel like being verbally abused by joe, so I didn't really bother to comment.
