Bonnie Bassler on how bacteria "talk"

Awesome. Awesome science :)

Oh then it just came to my mind again, creationist idiot saying "Science only leads to killing people" - "Good word, good word!"

right... If it wasn't for research like this they would be lucky to get past their 40's....

Brilliance.

I hope this won't lead to the same problems with resistance that current antibiotics have.

Either way it will at least open up a new front to fight disease. :)

Dammit will someone please post what this apparently fascinating video is about! (For those of us trying to conserve high-speed internet until the end of the exams)

Conserve the internet? Poor bastard...

It's a lady talking about how bacteria communicate using specific molecules. Point is, that a bacterial illness apparently becomes dangerous only if enough bacteria have been replicated (or else an "attack" would be futile). So through the concentration of signal molecules, the bacteria manage to "inform" others of their presence, and at one point, where there are enough bacteria, all of them activate simultaneously.

What they are now doing is to trick the bacteria in believing that they are alone so they don't activate (by jamming the receptors which are supposed to check for signal molecule presence). Or mess with the signaling molecules in other ways to manipulate the bacterias behaviour. Good stuff.

So it's about interfering with quorum sensing to control disease? AHL's and stuff, Cool.
