As far as hording as much power as possible goes, I nominate Benito Mussolini. The guy went from being an Elementary School teacher that writes his own newspaper to ruling Italy.

Well, I've always had pride in Seretse Khama. It would've been so easy for this guy to go as crooked as other African leaders have, but he chose not to, and actually implemented policies which effectively reduced corruption to ridiculously low levels.

Then again, Julius Caesar was awesome too.
