Consumers are being warned to check packs of Nurofen Plus after it emerged that thousands could mistakenly contain antipsychotic drugs.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a safety alert following reports that some batches contained Seroquel XL 50mg instead of Nurofen Plus.

Seroquel XL is a prescription-only anti-psychotic drug used to treat several disorders including schizophrenia, mania and bipolar depression.

Affected batches:
Batch 13JJ - Expiry date 03/2014. Product licence no - 00327 / 0082. First distributed - 30 April 2011
Batch 57JJ - Expiry date - 05/2014. Product licence no - 00063 / 0376. First distributed - 21 June 2011
Batch 49JJ - Expiry date - 05/2014. Product licence no - 00063 / 0376. First distributed - 1 July 2011

Seroquel is a serotonin enhancer and shouldn't have any ill effects... other than making one very sleepy.

That's not what it says in the pharmacological information I was reading last night. It has a long list of side-effects many of them very serious.

Also, the same drug can be sold under different names in different countries.
Equally different drugs can be sold under the same name in different countries, so the Seroquel you're talking about might not be the same drug.

It has become widely used here because of it's low risk of side-effects. Like any medication, they must list every possible ill effect, regardless of how remote the chance is.

Also, the same drug can be sold under different names in different countries.
Equally different drugs can be sold under the same name in different countries, so the Seroquel you're talking about might not be the same drug.

Makers of Nurofen Plus recall all remaining stock

Other types of drugs apart from Seroquel have now been found in some packets of Nurofen, and the manufacturers suspect sabotage.
